I might be biased, but every two scrolls on Substack feels like déjà vu. It’s just TikTok’s pseudo intellectual content articulated in writing. Unoriginal, unresearched ideas repurposed in buzzwords. I miss when it was random stories, not a race to sound profound.

The scapegoating of lack of PhDs in Kenya as the reason for underdevelopment is hypocritical at best. Last I checked, Research is allocated less than 5% of the country’s GDP, and policy decisions are left to school dropouts at the top. Let me not get to the accreditation part

I was telling my friend nowadays I'm cautious on what I'm consuming especially written content.
Plus true articulation is not about using big words and jargons, unless you have a target audience.

@thoughtnjoki I get the point. That's why I used to enjoy substack a lot last year. People were writing, in the simplest manner and it was just a random story, experience and passions.
Nowadays it feels like some sort of clique.

@wangar3h Don't get me wrong ,these articles and essays are definitely subject to criticism, and some are very valid . What I'm saying is that we would much rather have people write, and we correct them than people not writing at all

When I tell someone I'm interested in research, the first response you'll get is "ooh so academia and teaching" and I'm like no.
There is a research to building gap, and if we could find a way to make this seamless it would be good for our country in terms of innovation.

One thing I noticed while on tech is that we are always being told to get the skills, but few people want to do the research part.
Most of the big technologies started from a research project.

Hot take- the biggest barriers to trying new hobbies in Kenya is elitism. Cyclists geeking over bikes, hikers flexing salomons, car guys making it about status. If your community scares beginners, it’s not growing its gatekeeping
