Excellent advice! I would add- think very early on about the end game. Decide what you’ll you want to do with the PhD and customize the training for that goal.

Today I lost my companion of 40 years. She was my rock, the person I shared my troubles with, my love, friend, and wife. However, Alzheimer's has hollowed her out and today she entered full time care. It's the best thing for both of us although it doesn't feel like it.
