Not a quiet day in AI! 😅 Google DeepMind just dropped an experimental version of Gemini 1.5 Pro which surpasses GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet in the Chatbot Arena. I had to take it for a spin in Google AI Studio. My first impressions and FULL video here: youtu.be/lUA9elNdpoY Overall, very impressed with the extraction capabilities from images and PDFs. It does feel super close to what GPT-4o gives in terms of vision capabilities and what Claude 3.5 Sonnet gives me on code generation and PDF understanding/reasoning.

Gemini-1.5 Pro has its spotlight stolen today, and people are poking fun at Sora vs Google memes. Well, I think it's the biggest boost in LLM capability so far in 2024. v1.5's 10M token context (1) excels at retrieval; (2) generalizes zero-shot to extremely long instructions like full tutorials and codebases; and (3) works across modalities such as text, audio, and video. Here's a stunning example: v1.5 learns to translate from English to Kalamang purely in context, following a full linguistic manual at inference time. Kalamang is a language spoken by fewer than 200 speakers in western New Guinea. Gemini has never seen this language during training and is only provided with 500 pages of linguistic documentation, a dictionary, and ~400 parallel sentences in context. It basically acquires a sophisticated new skill in the neural activations, instead of gradient finetuning. I talked about the Myth of Context Length many times before: don't get too excited by claims of 1M or even 1B context tokens. LSTMs already achieved literally infinite context length 25 yrs ago! What truly matters is how well the model actually uses the context to solve real-world problems, and Gemini-1.5 has surpassed the SOTA with flying colors. The paper is also well-written with lots of solid quantitative analysis on in-context memorization and generalization. Google's new flagship AI model, "Gemini," is set to be a direct competitor to GPT-4 and boasts computing power 5 times that of GPT-4. Trained on Google's TPUv5 chips, it's capable of simultaneous operations with a massive 16,384 chips. The dataset used for training this model is around 65 trillion tokens, and it's multi-modal, accepting text, video, audio, and pictures. Moreover, it can produce both text and images. The training also included content from YouTube and used advanced training techniques similar to "AlphaGo-type" methods. Google plans to release the Gemini model to the public in December 2023.

Ok so I've been testing Google's Gemini (the artist formerly known as Bard) on a few phones for a few weeks now. Some things I've noticed that stood out: Upsides - Tons of useful new generative features - can write letters, craft trip plans, create images, etc. All the good stuff - Notably better semantic understanding of random fact-based questions Downsides - It's missing some classic Google Assistant features like home control and adding to shopping lists - The new pop-up UI is a little more complex, but you can get used to it - Renaming it is gonna confuse a lot of people for no reason It's rolling out today and you can play with it: gemini.google.com/app
