The fact that Andrew Cuomo won an Emmy for his press conferences while bumbling spectacularly through NY’s covid response says a lot about the shallow aesthetics that characterize much of American liberal politics.

This one’s my favorite. Being mean girl = capitalism. Exquisite analysis.

I get that squabbling over terminology is petty but the ridiculous “X is because of capitalism” takes really irk me

@ZakEbrahim If you narrowly define “capitalism thriving” as “stock market goes up” then sure. Not sure how you look at the numbers on small business closures and unemployment claims and think the economy as a whole is thriving. The economy ≠ financial markets ≠ capitalism.

“Let me explain this to you” followed by incomprehensible semantic confusion... honestly feels like academia

@jasonintrator I like to think that academia holds itself to higher epistemic standards than the government, on average

@ZubyMusic Just say you don’t understand statistics and move on. The average is obviously skewed downward by premature and accidental deaths.

Read this unbelievable statement from a @FerrisState professor placed on administrative leave Monday. He touches on everything from his use of the n-word, to the legitimacy of the moon landing. “The entire world has fallen under the spell of a satanic, globalist elite.”

@lhfang @mattyglesias The incentives are also such that everyone is trying to outcompete each other for the most outrageous-within-the-bounds-of-believable takes because that’s what drives clicks and views. The result is often a hot mess of stupidity.

Punditry incentives are often aligned against accuracy. The best way to advance an elite/ideological media career is to make up whatever the base audience wants to hear. Confirm biases. Never q convention. There's no penalty for being wrong- trapeze onto the next bandwagon issue.

@JTasioulas Supererogatory acts are a gigantic intellectual cop out, yet remain fairly widely used in moral frameworks

Name a widely held philosophical doctrine that you’ve never found in the slightest degree plausible. For me - utilitarianism.

@himbonomics No, I’m agreeing with you. Saying the labor theory of value is as archaic as Newtonian mechanics.

the labor theory of value is bunk, and is actually such a relic that it predates the neoclassical additions of "marginal" thinking to econ e.g. marginal product of capital and labor, marginal revenue, marginal cost etc.
