We owe a debt of gratitude to the Catholic Church for her efforts in safeguarding and disseminating Scripture.
Consider these facts:
1: For centuries, the faithful were not educated enough to read, or were only functionally literate. Verbal teaching, art and stained glass windows communicated Bible stories. During the Middle Ages, the church hid copies of the Bible to protect them from invading vandals (Huns, Visigoths, Vikings).
2: Prior to 1436 and the invention of the printing press, the Bible was written by hand, taking monks thousands of hours to transcribe onto vellum. Hardly anyone owned one, so Bibles were chained to the wall to prevent theft. (In fact, the first book ever printed by Gutenberg was a Catholic Bible!)
3: There was a lack of Bibles in the common vernacular. St. Jerome translated the Bible from the original languages into Latin, the people’s language, declaring that “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ”.
4: Vernacular versions of the Bible were still rare in many regions. Sts. Cyril and Methodius developed an alphabet for the Slavic people to translate the entire Bible for them.
5: Even with the advent of the printing press, illuminated copies of the Bible were produced in limited runs and took a year to produce. Creating new vernacular translations required interpretations, resulting in heretical translations that the Catholic Church tried to eliminate.
