Families have been crying out for action to protect children from harmful social media – and we've worked with them to find a real solution. We are really worried that the government hasn't listened, and has instead come up with a half-baked policy that won't keep children safe.

@TracyBrabin Is it not a parents job to keep their children safe? Parental controls exist. Why do we need this and why are they allowed access to bluesky where minor attracted people have a safe space.

Big tech firms have shown they’re not up to the task of keeping our children safe on their platforms. We still need to see all the details, but I’ve been clear a ban is needed. Too many young people have been used as guinea pigs in a vast social experiment for far too long.

Of course YouTube will hit back - they have millions of zombie children plugged in for hours a day. I see it on trains, in restaurants, in prams etc Children glued to YouTube when they should be communicating with parents / family, seeing the world around them, playing outside and reading books to create imagination and creativity. I don’t need to be a parent to see children’s social skills go down the pan because of a lack of real life interaction in social settings, because parents take the easy way out of plonking screens in front of their children. I had parents who both worked two jobs yet still sat with me to do homework, read books and play with educational games from the early learning centre.

Keir Starmer has announced his plan for an under-16 social media ban, covering platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Facebook and X. The plans also include extra protections from harmful features such as livestreaming and contact from strangers, including on gaming sites.

I’ve long fought for this as it’s the right thing to do. As Conservatives, we’ve always believed in safeguarding children. Adults should be free, but we must protect childhood.

Very good news. I fully support this ban. It’s much needed action to protect our kids and give them their childhood back. My survey of constituents showed clear backing for a ban. We must work at pace to implement this and ensure proper enforcement.
