@traddingtonbear He's not judged canonically. He can still receive criticism. Paul corrected Peter when Peter was wrong.

@Patti881921424 I remember being in prison, some inmates would carve into the prison doors “and this too shall pass”. Thank you sister.

@CharlesTingler Psalm 5:11-12 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you. For you bless the righteous, O LORD; you cover him with favor as with a shield.

@Stand4Unborn That has nothing to do with apostolic succession and I don't think you even understand the concept which is why this conversation is over. Have a good day.

@CharlesTingler No one was there when Jesus resurrected. Jesus appeared to the apostles AND Paul after He had already resurrected. It’s not a red herring, and it has everything to do with apostolic succession as Acts 1:21-22 is the written qualification to be given the office of apostle.

Well, now you're committing eisegesis because that's not what Jesus said. He didn't say anything about declaring, and he wasn't speaking to all Christians. He was speaking to the Apostles. He says you have the authority to forgive sins and the authority to withhold sins. He doesn't say anything about declaring. He literally gives them the power. That's sacramental absolution. That's what we find in both the Eastern Orthodox and the Catholic Church. You're not being faithful to the text. Maybe this paragraph from the Catechism of the Catholic Church will help. 👇🏽👇🏽 Only God forgives sins.* Since he is the Son of God, Jesus says of himself, “The Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins” and exercises this divine power: “Your sins are forgiven.”* Further, by virtue of his divine authority he gives this power to men to exercise in his name.* - The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, CCC 1441
immurator@immurator

They, and all Christians, have the authority to declare on God's behalf that someone is forgiven when they repent of their sins and receive Christ as Savior. They have authority to declare that someone is unforgiven when they happen to repented and received Jesus. What they don't have is the willy-nilly authority to forgive or not forgive sins on a whim. Also, this authority is given to all believers not just the apostles. God bless you, My friend. I pray for you every time I see your posts. I appreciate how vulnerable you are and willing to share about the things that you have been going through! It's good for all of us.

@Stand4Unborn Paul was not there when Jesus rose and appeared to the Apostles. He only saw a bright light on the road to Damascus. This is all a red herring anyways because it has absolutely nothing to do with apostolic succession.

@CharlesTingler I’m not changing it. You are not understanding what scripture says. The way you are twisting the scripture there would be NO apostles ever since NONE of the 12 witnesses Jesus resurrect. They did all witness the resurrection though as they all saw the resurrected Christ.

@Stand4Unborn Now you’re changing your standard. You said witness the resurrection, now you’re changing it to the glorified Christ lol. Paul was not there when Jesus rose. Therefore, he’s not an Apostle based on your logic.

@CharlesTingler Paul was a witness to the resurrection of Jesus Christ as he witnessed the resurrected glorified Jesus Christ. The Bible says 500 people witnessed the resurrected Jesus. 1 Corinthians 9:1: "Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord?"

@CharlesTingler Acts 1:21-22 makes it clear that a qualification to hold the office of apostle was to have been a witness of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. No one alive today meets that qualification.

This does not disprove apostolic succession as a principle of continuity in teaching and ordination; it shows organic development. Apostolic succession classically means preserving the apostolic faith through those publicly appointed and recognized in the churches (as Irenaeus stressed), not necessarily a rigid 1st-century organizational chart. Both Catholic and Orthodox traditions maintain lines of bishops tracing back.

Catholic apologists put a lot of stock in apostolic succession to legitimize Rome's authority. But scholarship shows this is institutional mythology. Even Catholic scholars like Raymond Brown, John Meier, and Robert Eno admit Peter was never "bishop of Rome" in any meaningful sense. Eno says, "Peter was not the first bishop of Rome. The little-known Linus holds that honour." The papal succession lists were constructed in the 180s to legitimize Eleutherus. Peter Lampe's research shows there was no monarchical bishop in Rome for over 150 years. Multiple house churches with no central authority was the norm. That's not apostolic succession. That's institutional mythology. (See Joshua Sijuwade, "The Identity of the Church," forthcoming in Analytic Christian Theism, Routledge)

You keep narrowing the discussion to one verse while ignoring the rest of Paul. He teaches judgment according to deeds, faith working through love, and God producing works of faith in believers. You refuse to engage the full picture and keep redefining the terms to avoid it. This conversation is not productive, so I am done here.

@CharlesTingler "Obedience that flows from faith" is not being discussed here. If you want to argue against biblical Christianity you should first learn what it teaches

You keep assuming “works” means good works or works through charity. The works scripture condemns is the works of the mosaic law. That was the curse. Not doing good and living a holy life. He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; — Romans 2:6-7 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. — Ephesians 2:10 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith working through love. — Galatians 5:6 Even God WORKS through faith. having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead. — Colossians 2:12 To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work of faith by his power, — 2 Thessalonians 1:11 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? — James 2:14 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. — James 2:17 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone. — James 2:24 And Jesus himself ends public revelation with the Book of Revelation by saying this. “‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. — Revelation 2:19
Bahbahbased Sheep✝️@BahBahBased

@CharlesTingler @ProtPhilosopher Except thats not what faith is. Also not what the text says, it literally says "not of works, so that man may boast". And let's look into another writing of Paul where he talked about boasting
