@LydNot @joshgans @avicgoldfarb Always more work, always harder problems to solve!! Working on better problems!
English

in their new o-ring automation paper, @joshgans and @avicgoldfarb hold task cardinality fixed as we automate! i claim that, in response to automation, we increase the number of tasks we perform.
they suppose n tasks, k automated, n - k = m remaining manual tasks, and say the worker's fixed time endowment h will concentrate on m. human task quality improves from h/n to h/m.
let κ = n/m. (κ > 1)
i say we may shift to κn tasks, κk automated, and the worker's remaining time endowment will concentrate on κm. human task quality stays constant at h/κm = h/n.
so the quality of m may not increase as they claim, but the upshot is likewise that human employment stays high.

Dario is a brilliant technologist, but Demis is the better economist. He must have read @joshgans & @avicgoldfarb o-ring paper on automation.

4 months after our hunger strike, Demis Hassabis finally agreed that he would pause if everyone else also paused.
However, we can't have only one company say that. This requires international coordination.
@DarioAmodei @sama @elonmusk — your turn.

One of the most interesting parts of my convo w/ @demishassabis: He would support a “pause” on AI if he knew all companies + countries would do it — so society and regulation could catch up
