In 2023, Anthropic promised to pause training if its AI outpaced its safety measures. In February 2026, they scrapped that promise, while Demis Hassabis said at Davos he'd be open to a conditional pause. So on March 21st, we're marching to Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI to ask every CEO: would you pause if the others do?

A week from today, we will be at Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI, demanding that leaders agree to a conditional AI pause. These companies are recklessly endangering all of our lives. Their excuse is that they can't pause unilaterally. So they must commit to pausing if others do.

@jachiam0 Agree that not talking past AI developers matters. I've just added two bullet points to the FAQ to that end. Fwiw, during the DeepMind hunger strike we'd talk to employees daily, and eventually got a thank you letter from employees mentioning internal support. Same ask as now.

I think your movement is largely talking past the people building AI instead of talking to them. I kinda get that you are collectively appealing to higher powers and the broader public to intervene, but I still think there's a lot more room for constructive engagement in priority-setting related to safety, and there's a loss for everyone if the AI safety politics gets too offputting to the AI developers. It's just not an especially healthy dynamic; it makes certain important safety goals much less likely to be achieved IMHO.

I'm going to make a request for some basics from the Pause folks: please outline a practicable version of a pause. Do you mean no training runs above a certain scale? Do you mean furlough the researchers indefinitely? What are you specifically asking for?

@jachiam0 We can debate the exact definition of 'frontier' but the principle matters more than the specific instantiation People point to benchmarks like the Epoch capabilities index, but I think teams authoring the large model releases moving to narrow AI or alignment is neater. (2/2)

@jachiam0 Hey Joshua, I made that website (stoptherace.ai) Our ask is to stop developing new frontier models if the other major labs agree to do the same. The teams working on improving the capabilities of these models would move to narrow AI or alignment research instead. (1/)

In SF this Saturday (March 21), there will be a stoptherace.ai protest at Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI, asking each CEO to commit to pausing frontier AI R&D if every other major lab does the same. @So8res hopes to speak to the group as a whole. Be there if you can!

I asked Congressman @RoKhanna twice what he thinks of pausing AI. He ended up claiming we can't unilaterally pause because of "medicine" and "clean energy"

@So8res Thanks Nate! We also see this as a first step towards international coordination. We have David Krueger & Will Fithian (Berkeley Stats Professor) lined up to give a speech at the protest, and would love to have you join us. More info about the protest: stoptherace.ai

I think "commit to pause if everyone else will too" is a decent ask. Would need to be international and would require credible worldwide enforcement, but AI CEOs clearly and plainly stating "this is an emergency and it'd be better if we were all slowed" is a good first step.
