Maybe, but I saw more homeless people on a ten minute walk in New York than I'll see in an average month in Lisburn/Belfast. The US is undoubtedly ok to live in if you have money, for those that don't you are absolutely fucked.

Most of my friends in Paris/London have a distorted view of the US, and sometimes a weird superiority complex. They think only the top 1% lives well and everyone else is trapped in social collapse (guns, healthcare horror stories, obesity, politics, LA homelessness, NYC dysfunction). Then they visit random suburbs in Texas, Florida or the Midwest and see middle-class families clearing $300k+/year with huge houses, multiple cars, space, AC, full restaurants, youth sports complexes and mass retail abundance. The uncomfortable reality is that a lot of “ordinary” Americans live materially better than European elites. Idk if it's media manipulation, denial of reality or straight ignorance, but we’re getting underclassed and most people only realize it when they land there.

@BarbeloPleroma We were in the Hyatt Grand Central in NYC - the alley from 42nd to Time Square past H&M looked like something from an 70s movie and smelt like a portaloo in Basra at midday. Obviously the whole city isn't like that but the number of highly visible homeless genuinely shocked me.

@6Merican We don't generally have massive detached houses in our cities, because there was never that much room in city centres even back then, but it's safe to say we do also have the ultimate detached houses out in the country too

@6Merican There's areas in literally every British city where the richer families used to live - ship's officers and shipping line officials in Liverpool and Bristol, linen magnates and shipyard management in Belfast, cotton mill owners across Lancashire, the list is endless.
