“Love Story” producers say masculine men are hard to find: “We're not making those guys anymore.” Executive producer Brad Simpson recently shared that casting JFK Jr. “was hard”: “We were three weeks away from shooting and we still [had] not cast him. We'd seen every male actor between the age of 25 and 38. Part of it was just that sort of '80s, old school masculinity — a man with hair on his chest, sort of Richard Gere, Tom Selleck, the classic chiseled looks — we're not making those guys anymore, for some reason, and he really needed to have that.”

Three things that are true: 1) The Iran war is unpopular with the majority of Americans, including independents who voted for Trump 2) Trump's core voters, in contrast to the rest of the public, are fine with it. 3) The GOP needs more than MAGA Republicans to win elections.

This is a great framework. High sincerity is low key*unnerving* for most Americans Some immigrants have trouble in the US b/c our core pathos is a type of “effusive, if insincere, politeness”. We are warm and welcoming but we don’t MEAN it This is diff from LATAM, EU or Asia
Ben Springwater@benspringwater

I feel like the “Bay Area is high sincerity / low irony, New York is high irony / low sincerity” 2 x 2 really is the high order bit with the most explanatory power when it comes to culture and vibe. Sasha and @clarabcollier nail it.

Even more so than ‘geopolitical rivals and enemies’, they vilify Europeans and other White nations with more vigour than their own enemies in Washington. Mark Levin and Laura Loomer are openly trying to purge them a là McMaster and Kushner in Trump I.
eugyppius@eugyppius1

MAGA accounts on here routinely express more hatred, rejection, and vilification of Europeans than they do of their country’s genuine geopolitical rivals and enemies. It’s amazing but true.

@6Merican @eugyppius1 @ScottMGreer "Americans have been outright racially demeaned by Europeans for decades" It doesn't endear them to me, but who cares? Europeans don't need an excuse to mock us anymore than we need one for them. If someone from either continent is acting in bad faith, you can just ignore them.

Ireland - St Patrick's Day parade attendees look on in complete confusion as Nigerians dressed in their traditional attire dance through the streets. Look at the crowd on both sides, nobody is clapping or cheering, everyone is wondering why this is happening.

It’s just incredible. Does it even need saying? Trump wants members of a defensive alliance to join a war he started after spending months causing a crisis in Europe by threatening to forcibly annex the territory of a member state. Now he’s pissed off like a child. Same mental capacity.

Trump lashes out at Europe and NATO this morning, calling them "cowards" for not assisting the US in opening the Strait of Hormuz.

Americans were more tolerant of European arrogance when the continent had a reputation for cultured sophistication and industrial capability. Any American who remembers the Europe of 20+ years ago has observed the stark decline. And it’s not just because of migrants crowding around the Eiffel Tower. German cars are crap now. Luxury clothing is made with thinner fabrics & the styling is plebeian. French wine is overpriced relative to its quality. There’s no new high art or really any new major cultural or intellectual production coming out of Europe, and the popular culture is not just Americanized, it’s increasingly Africanized. Meanwhile activists are vandalizing art museums and Crown Jewels are being stolen from the Louvre by subsaharans. And all of this is happening as European governments buy energy from Russia while asking America to fund a proxy war against Russia. And yet we hear from European leaders and media the same tones of arrogance and moral superiority as we did back in 2003. The result of all this is that now rather than evoking feelings of annoyance and even a touch of embarrassment, because of the admiration Americans had toward European culture, Americans are now feeling a growing disrespect and even a certain contempt for Europe. It’s not a healthy dynamic, and I’m not at all praising it, but it is born out of European decline and the mismatch in self-estimation Americans are observing between European attitudes and European reality.

@HowIMineFish @eugyppius1 They can’t because the Amerimutt discourse, which has lasted decades, is simply far more prevalent and pans out in opinion polls that show Europeans have a lower opinion of America than vice-versa

@eugyppius1 This is mainly site dynamics. The algo feeds sharp, punchy engagement (attacks). This means the average Ameribro encounters mostly Euro seething, while the Eurobro encounters mostly Ami dipshittery. Both sides can reliably say they're just responding. /Shrug

@eugyppius1 Nothing about what anyone under 30 watches or listens to today is in any way American in the cultural sense, which was my point. American techcos and brands like Coca-Cola and such are considered evil capitalist psyops and people regularly get shit on for liking them

inb4 “but you Euros hated us first”: This is not true and most of you have no idea what Euros think about much of anything, you’re engaged with a cartoon fantasy of the continent. The European political class and the American political class share a general contempt for the rabble (ie, us) on both sides of the Atlantic, and there is a classic ‘small country effect’ whereby European nations try to out-moral (i.e., out-shitlib) the Americans, which the American prog left uses to push their agenda in turn. I obviously hate these dynamics and find them retarded but Euros aren’t remotely your enemies.

On James Gracey A nation is judged by what it tolerates, and by what it refuses to ignore. A young American is dead in Barcelona. That alone should be enough to demand answers. The death of James Gracey cannot be just another headline that fades with the news cycle. We owe him, and we owe his family, the dignity of a full and serious investigation into how he died. Not speculation. Not assumptions. Facts. This is not about alarm. It’s about principle. When an American is harmed abroad, the United States must make it unmistakably clear: we pursue the truth, we demand accountability, and we do not tolerate harm against our own, anywhere. Because if we fail to do that, we are not just failing one family, we are signaling to the world that harming Americans carries no consequence. Rest in Peace. @USembassyMadrid @StateDept @TravelGov
