The vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool is not just damage to concrete, water systems, or landscaping. It is an attack on public order itself. People who have lived in or traveled through developing countries know exactly how this story starts. It never begins with a collapsed nation. It begins with people deciding that public property belongs to nobody. It begins when criminals, activists, vandals, and agitators discover there are no serious consequences. Then the decay spreads. EXAMPLE #1: PUBLIC MONUMENTS In many developing nations, monuments, parks, and public squares that once symbolized national pride become covered in graffiti, vandalized, stripped for materials, or left in disrepair because authorities fail to enforce standards. What starts as one act of vandalism becomes ten. Ten becomes a hundred. Soon people stop caring because they assume nobody else cares.
