Sweden get the job done comfortably, that front 2 of Isak and Gyokores a BIG threat in transition and when combined with playing a team who aren’t great at defending transitions in Tunisia it led to them having a field day. Sweden often went long from goal kicks using Isak and Gyokores who are both good in their air for knock downs for players in close proximity for 2nd balls. Nygren (6’1) and Bernhardsson (6’0) also outlets for Sweden to go long too. In settled possession a basic 3-1-6 or 3-5-2 dependent on how you look at it. Not many rotations between players. Wingbacks wide, Ayari in the left half space, Nygren in the right, and the strikers split with 1 usually looking to run in behind and the other slightly deeper to draw a CB towards him (leaving space for the other ST to attack). Those 2 ST’s will be dangerous against ANYONE. Out of possession man to man from Tunisia goal kicks and reverted into a 5-3-2 mid block deeper. I actually didn’t mind them defending deep as Tunisia offered nothing creativity wise in open play when they had small phases of settled possession, through drawing Tunisia high and letting them play it led to spaces being created for Isak and Gyokores to hit in transition when Sweden won the ball back. Tunisia as mentioned lacking attacking patterns of play and 3rd man movements in the final 3rd. The few periods they had with the ball often resulted in passing sideways and backwards all the time due to the lack of rotations. Hannibal would drop from high to low and coordinate the build up telling teammates to push high, remain deep, pointing at spaces for players to move into, telling teammates to calm the tempo etc etc. Too much reliance on him. If he doesn’t create something or dribble past someone to open the game up no one does. Out of possession a passive 5-3-2, the passiveness led to Sweden’s first goal with Isak spinning in behind Tunisia’s fairly high line with 0 pressure on the ball high. Overall I’d like to see more fluidity and rotations from Sweden when in possession. Tunisia I don’t hold much hope for in the remaining games. 🇸🇪🇹🇳

What a truly incredible season, won the eastern conference after being in prime position since Christmas. Smashed Ottawa, Smashed Flyers and only 1 defeat in the Conference final. I personally thought the final would be Hurricanes vs Avalanche, Hurricanes fully deserve this.

Tunisia with their first period of settled possession after 35 minutes, a 3-1-6 with Skhiri the set 6 and Khedria advanced into the right half space. Hannibal frequently dropping from high to low, he’s the coordinator of the build up often telling his teammates to push up, drop deeper, calm the tempo etc etc. Good for Tunisia that their best player is also their most vocal and clearly most respected as everyone is listening to exactly what he’s telling them. Goal from a cross following a set piece, yet to really see any open play chance creation so looks like it’s going to have to be set pieces for Tunisia. 🇹🇳

Basic 3-1-6 in possession for Sweden, 3 CB’s behind Karlström locked in the 6, wingbacks wide, Ayari in the left half space, Nygren in the right. Strikers split often 1 running in behind and one slightly deeper. No real rotations between players within the shape however. Basic, but against a much inferior opposition they can get away with it. Tunisia a 5-3-2 off the ball, front 2 with very little pressure on the ball and it led to the opening goal. Isak spins in behind with 0 pressure on the ball high, a lack of intensity to backtrack from Khadira allows Gyokores to get to the 2nd ball control it and shoot. Rebound from that then falls to Ayari who scores. Keeper has to save the Sweden 2nd. Not particularly impressed with either side here.

His acceleration from a standing start was freakish. Despite Leipzig wanting to keep him for 1 more season, his positive performances in the World Cup will only boost the price tag they can demand for him. I was also impressed with him defensively, one example was he lost the ball in the 50th minute and sprinted all the way back with intent of getting the ball back and tackled the ball carrier. Another example 3 minutes in with him supporting Doue in a 1v1 situation through tracking back. I’ve watched a lot of him in the Bundesliga this season, he’s unbelievable. ⭐

Get in! Really impressed with Ivory Coast, this is why I put them as my NO1 dark horse due to their in possession dynamics and individual quality. Great coach who’s flexible and not afraid to make big in game tactical adaptations. Yes they can get more pressure on the ball in their mid block, but so can everyone this tournament 🤣. We saw in the first half in particular their press transition from zonal to man to man really well with great coordination (backed up centrally), the usual trigger of backwards passes from the opposition into their own half. Ecuador were good, no doubt. Wingbacks inverted between the lines in build up in a 3-2-5. Vitte dropping into the backline at times to receive facing forwards. They’ll beat Curaçao but not sure about Germany as Ecuador are susceptible to players being free to receive between the defensive and midfield lines which is one of Germany’s strengths. Pepe in the 36th minute and again in the 51st minute an example. 1. Wahi pinned BOTH CB’S. 2. Cote d’Ivoire dropped the double pivot deeper drawing out the 2 Ecuador CM’s in their 4-4-2 mid block. 3. Found the spare man between the lines, one time leading to them hitting the post. It is key to note however that Germany’s out of possession compactness when in a settled mid block wasn’t really tested today against hugely inferior opposition, but we saw them exposed at times in transition which is recurring theme in Germany’s games. That should be a very interesting match up. Pleased for Ivory Coast! I expect a win vs Curaçao and a very competitive match against Germany. 🇨🇮🇪🇨

I think I’m the only one but I actually like the drinks breaks, allows managers to make tactical tweaks which have a big affect on the game. In this Ivory Coast vs Ecuador game we saw Ecuador get the better of a lot of 2nd balls when they went long with Ivory Coast originally man to man from Ecuador goal kicks. Following the first drinks break we saw Emerse Faé change the pressing structure with Ivory Coast now pressing to give themself a +1 at the back to help them win the 2nd balls. Narrow ST’s forcing play to one side, ball side striker presses cutting off the return passing lane and the far side striker shifts across to the opposition 6.

@htomufc They’re talking about him not being direct whilst showing clips of Diomande destroying him 1v1 😂

Didn’t really understand any of that half-time analysis on BBC about Diomande, at all. He’s taking too much touches & not being direct enough when he’s won 5?/7 1v1s against one of the better FBs in Europe. Esp defensively. He had a ‘dip’ because he didn’t get the ball, but it was framed as if he was playing badly. Strange.

Ecuador are exploitable between defensive and midfield lines when they look to transition from a zonal press to a man to man to press. This is because at times a CB doesn’t always make a central jump to back up the press. Pepe was free behind the midfield line when Ecuador jumped to press in the 36th minute, another similar moment in the 28th minute. Looks like following the first drinks break Ivory Coast have stopped pressing from restarts man to man instead opting for Fofana half and half, Pepe and Wahi narrow looking to force the play to one side, from there the ball side 9 presses cutting off the return passing lane and the far side 9 moves to the 6. Caicedo and Vite playing on staggered lines in build up.
Dom@dzi_analysis

Really great game this. Both sides build in a 3-2-5 in settled possession (made up differently though) Both sides press man to man from opposition goal kicks, both sides in a 4-4-2 mid block which transitions man to man higher up. Ecuador create a 4-4-2 through Yeboah alongside Valencia in the front 2 and Plata moving into the midfield line, Franco (RCB) moved to RB with Hincapie at LB. Big fan of Ivory Coast in possession, from goal kicks a 4-2-4 with the pivots starting high and dropping low dragging their markers high, this leaves 1v1 situations on the Ecuador backline for Ivory Coast to go long too. Few passes to entice the press and allow the midfield to drop before clipping it long. Vitte often dropping into the backline in Ecuador build up. Ivory Coast need to keep getting the ball to Diomande, been a huge threat 1v1 as always.

Horrible in game changes from Koeman, Summerville should have played the 90 Not convinced with The Netherlands. Too static in possession and nowhere near enough rotations or 3rd man movements higher up the pitch. Static 4-3-3. Wide triangles on both sides but no interchanging between the 3 players makes it a lot easier to defend. Out of possession far too passive in a 5-4-1. Netherlands 2nd goal comes from a simple Dumfries overlap on the right creating space for Summerville to cut inside. Can’t particularly say the same for the left as Van De Ven is at left back, he isn’t a natural LB so won’t particularly have good understanding on when to rotate with players in Netherlands left sided triangle and when to overlap and underlap in supporting attacks. (Not that anyone was consistently rotating in the Netherlands structure anyway). Combine Van De Ven simply not being a natural LB with Gakpo who isn’t the most successful at taking the opposition LB on 1v1 and it leads to the left side being extremely limited in what it can offer. A draw a fair result. 🇳🇱🇯🇵

Netherlands have wide triangles on both sides, however there’s absolutely no movements or rotations within those triangles. It’s all static. A 4-3-3 with nothing. Execution has been incredibly lethargic and it makes defending incredibly simple for Japan.

@Florian_04_ I see I see, however higher up the pitch there’s still so little rotations within the structure.

@dzi_analysis They want to minimise the risk of being caught in transition as this has been a huge issue for them in the last friendlies

Extremely basic 4-3-3 in possession for The Netherlands, rarely see any transition into a back 3 or any other settled possession shape, took 8 minutes to see the first rotation or bit of movement with Dumfries moving high and De Jong moving to RB. Rare to see such little movement in possession.
