Resistance training works. - Improves health & performance outcomes - Doesn't have to be traditional weights - Simplest methods work best - Consistency and fitting it in around life are the most important considerations
Stuart Phillips (he/him)@mackinprof

1/ Big update in exercise science: ACSM has revised its resistance training Position Stand for the first time since 2009. That is a 17-year gap, and a lot has changed. 🧵pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12…

@TheGaelicVent Good point. I think they only looked at 13, 15 and 17 as that's when competition structures dictate you largely have to stream. Any streaming before that is a club decision to divide by ability in a games programme that's supposed to be non-competitive.

A few thoughts on the recent research on streaming. Listen to the podcast below with John & Dave Morris, they go into great detail on everything around it. But, it should have an * beside it, in my view...
John Murphy@fhsperformance

Should youth GAA players be grouped by ability? Many clubs use “streaming” — dividing players into A, B or C teams. A recent study explored how players, parents and coaches experience streaming in youth Gaelic games. Here are some of the key findings 🧵

@josemcdonnell87 I don't think we said it shouldn't be done. Just what are the current impacts so we can figure out how to do it best. If we don't know who will be the best in 15 years time, then we need to keep as many involved at their level so they can be as good as they can in future

The best thrive against the best. It makes them better. I am all for kids getting fair cracks but fs come on. We want to develop them to be as good as they can be. Doesn’t mean they’ll be the best in 15 years time but for now the best with the best regardless go age.

@RossMacM It was interview based, not questionnaire so not really a response rate

@fhsperformance Seems like a low response rate from the players- would like to see a much larger sample size

@NoelHolohan Oh yeh, in theory you should do a number of different sports to 15 or 16 but the structure and logistics of youth sport in Ireland doesn't support that, especially in the teenage years. Between school and club alone, GAA goes on year round with a number of overlaps.

@NoelHolohan Having looked into it a lot, I'm not against the playing of one code. A lot of counties have trialed both approaches over the years. Neither is ideal but think there are less negatives to picking one over trying to do both

@fhsperformance It’s 125 at under 14 😳and only allowed to play one code. But no stopping them playing rugby or soccer 😆😆😆

@NoelHolohan Again, depends on what else they're doing, how often and at what age. Bringing in 125 players once a month in their U13 year before going down to ~48 ahead of going to U14 isn't a terrible idea. They'll develop at such different rates it's really difficult to pick at that age

@sbap84 Have touched on that previously with Conor Shannon. Go back through the podcasts and you'll find it. Again, a useful tool but not the be-all and end-all to development

@RonanDonagh It's a constant balancing act. How can they get meaningful playing time and appropriate challenge alongside spending time with friends and peers? No hard answer but streaming can be useful provided players are still integrated or mixed at other times.

@fhsperformance Interesting stuff John thanks for sharing. I was a late convert to streaming but ultimately boiled down to me to kids getting more touches in games. Maybe it's my coaching isn't good enough but my experience has been no single thing improves young players more than that!

@NoelHolohan Numbers at trials is a minor factor. Were they completely open? Is that the number of players born in that year, etc Realistically most counties will carry 40-48 from U13 through to U16. Smaller counties probably 20-30. Very big (Cork, Dublin) could bring 72-96+

@NoelHolohan There is no optimum number. Dependent on the size and playing population of the county (which can sometimes change year to year) and the level which schools in the county are competing at. Plus the number of schools and geographical spread of where they're based

@Micheal_Nagle Hi Micheal, it didn't but it's largely forced once competition begins. If you have 50 U13s & there are divisions in the competition, then you essentially have to stream into teams. They don't have to remain streamed for training though and in most cases probably shouldn't

@movementcoachkm Didn't mention in the thread but did in the podcast. Large clubs are forced to stream by existing competition structures with no guidance on how to manage grouping by ability

@NoelHolohan Possibly if relative age effect was as impactful as we initially thought from other sports, but it isn't. Stages of maturation has a bigger impact. Schools are also generally on the mid year age

@fhsperformance Should competitions ages be changed every second year to 1/2 year ages The kid born in January is always the oldest on the team the kid born in December always the youngest. The July kid the middle player always.

@neil_shannon I'd have thought 85 interviews is decent. They are relatively short due to pitch side nature. It's kind of observational and cross-sectional in something that's due to have a small total sample size anyway
