I get the sentimental pull but with the current horse population there just isn’t enough horses to have Monmouth, Delaware Park, Parx, CharlesTown, Laurel and Penn National all racing.

@horseadata @ghartman02 Racing has ALWAYS been elitist. It started as a way for kings to show off their best war horse stock. In this country is was for boasting/breeding rights controlled by the rich. It stated getting more blue collar in the 1930s thanks to Vanderbilt's Seabiscuit race.

@AquiMystery @kevy_ray @SidKhurana3607 Colonial Downs racetrack tried this, being built in new kent co. , but it was unprofitable as a racetrack and wasn't able to draw enough people from Richmond or the 757. I live in richmond and would love to have a pro sports team more than anything

Feel terrible for the good people in Maryland @Preakness. The fact that the Belmont has been run at less than 1 1/2 miles 4 of the last 7 years hurts the Preakness just as much as the spacing.

But racing dosen't like people who are not born into racing, and who are not white, to be fans. So racings fanbase declines

@ghartman02 Taxpayer support? When I worked the Preakness I made a point of walking around a few blocks to speak to residents. Most had no clue what is really happening at Pimlico.

Mount Pleasant Meadows never had CAWs. They barely had bettors most days, but at least you knew the money in the pools was coming from the guy behind you in line at the window.
