Back in the 80s and 90s there was a huge bonus ($5m i think) for horses that ran in all 3 legs of the Triple Crown, and as a result most of the horses that ran in the Derby ran back in the Preakness and Belmont. Same thing would happen if they brought this back.

@missmaryeliza I say bring back the short-lived triple crown bonus from the 1990’s. Must start in all 3 races to qualify. 5 million to the horse with the most points, 2 million for second. 10 million to a triple crown winner.

@j96198 @NeverSettleTV @preakness Yes all aware but that doesn’t change my statement. 1st has been “Maryland” racing for many years now and CD doesn’t get to run the event from what I read. MJC already hired a company to run the event. No guarantee MJC would make the event successful again either

Feel terrible for the good people in Maryland @Preakness. The fact that the Belmont has been run at less than 1 1/2 miles 4 of the last 7 years hurts the Preakness just as much as the spacing.

@JustMyOpinions4 @lmgriffjohnson The main issue is that trainers now would rather wait 1-2 months between races instead of a few weeks, even though there is little to no evidence or proof that a longer rest for an already sound and healthy horse works.

@lmgriffjohnson I think it’s an issue people are creating now that didn’t exist for the 100+ years of the races.
If the horses could do it then, they can do it now. If not, we need to examine why not and if the training regimens and preparation are the issue.

I’ve seen this decision is controversial for the second year in a row- As a newcomer, I appreciate trainers putting the wellbeing of the horse first. I can appreciate the horsemanship & tradition of the original Triple Crown schedule, but it does make it hard to market/organize the race.

I used to get mad about Derby winners skipping Preakness. That it was bad for the sport. But the people who own the Preakness don’t give a flying fuck about horse racing so I’ve changed my tune. Owners and connections should do what’s best for the horse

@e073500 @rdrisms @chancurre Many more people here watched for the first time due to celebrities like Portnoy and Taylor Swift (rumor) having runners in the Oaks and Derby, plus fashion. This race is also promoted the most to outsiders compared to 99% of other races here.

@rdrisms @chancurre I agree that umamusume likely does not markedly impact ratings or odds (another discussion i saw come up). Not really sure what is driving the ratings bump though. I assumed it was due to the increase in sports betting but the actual race handle was down this year.

@PotePoteChannel Dirt is most popular, but turf racing is getting up there too. The Kentucky Derby is popular just like the Derby everywhere else, only difference is that it's Leg 1 of our Triple Crown. It's also the race that gets the most outside attention due to the fashion, celebrities, etc.
