BREAKING: Zohran Mamdani is expected to require ALL New York Elementary school students to learn Arabic numerals. As a Jewish American I still support this 100%

JUST IN: Man accused of throwing coins and shouting "f*** the Jews" at Dave Portnoy outside a Mississippi pizza shop has been charged, according to TMZ. 20-year-old Patrick McClintock has been arrested and charged with "disturbing the peace." "Every person has the right to feel safe and respected in our community," said Sgt. G. Brandon Lovelady. "Offensive words alone are protected, but when behavior disrupts a public event or risks violence, the Starkville Police Department will take steps to help maintain safety and security."

@emollick The paper absolute does make this claim. Right in the conclusion: "LLM ... convenience came at a cognitive cost, diminishing users' inclination to critically evaluate the LLM's output or ”opinions”... This highlights a concerning evolution of the 'echo chamber' effect..."

The paper doesn’t make this claim at all, nor could it given the methodology. (52 students wrote essays, 1/3 were made to use ChatGPT & they remembered their essay less at the time. 4 months later 18 people came back & the ChatGPT group were still less engaged in their essay)

@MatthewJBar Back then we thought scaling parameters was all that was required and it truely felt like AGI was around the corner. Now we have these painfully slow "reasoning models" that don't actually reason, and agents that kinda work sometimes.

Here's a prediction from February 2023 that we can now evaluate. Has the pace of AI progress over the past few years felt "intuitively nuts" to you? Personally, I don't think so. AI had a big moment with ChatGPT and GPT-4, but the 2 years since then felt mostly incremental to me.
Jack Clark@jackclarkSF

A mental model I have of AI is it was roughly ~linear progress from 1960s-2010, then exponential 2010-2020s, then has started to display 'compounding exponential' properties in 2021/22 onwards. In other words, next few years will yield progress that intuitively feels nuts.

@MedGold_ Only crude oil and 90% of the supply of natural gas. As long as you aren't going to need electricity, you should be fine.
