Dear friends and colleagues,
Today, my friends at New Ritual Press announced A Cancellation, my second novel from them, out May 30th.
I started trying to write this story in September of 2023, which is the month the novel concludes. For a long time it was called Amanda Here, the name of the subject’s vlogging channel. After a good amount of searching, though, I realized A Cancellation was what it had to be, in the tradition of A Teacher and A Separation.
In this book a woman named Amanda is doing a bad job running her life. She has a successful business as an internet skit artist, but she started it fourteen years ago and it’s increasingly a relic in the new attention economy. She also has a lot of psychosexual and relational problems that only get get worse and worse.
I don’t like to explicitly pathologize my characters, but you obviously can.
Anyway, Amanda blows up her life and her channel and it just keeps going down, down, down to a bitter public end. There’s a potential stalker, an Eve Harrington of an assistant, a nest of YouTuber gossip vipers, and a lot of other fairly well-researched disasters.
I lived a couple blocks from my strictly fictional character of Amanda Bannington, and even saw her house, although I never saw her. I hope you will find A Cancellation a bleakly entertaining and authentic look behind the curtain at second-string internet celebrities and the tangled web they weave. I’m grateful it has a home with the good people of New Ritual Press.
You can pre-order a Kindle copy now. There is no pre-order for the paperback but it will be purchasable online when the book comes out on May 30th.
If you are a writer yourself and you would like a free advance copy for the purposes of writing a review, please reach out to me or New Ritual for one. You could always run your review on your own blog, or submit it around to journals and magazines for publication. Either way we will try to get you some network-effect traffic.
There is no official review embargo, but I recommend you time your review release around or after the May 30th novel release date.
If you run text interviews or a podcast, I am also probably more than happy to appear or give an interview, and can do video. Just ask.
All my best,
Cairo

@JordanBlack1989 FFXV looks fun but I haven't played it yet. From this book by the marketing strategist Andy Cunningham: amazon.com/Get-Aha-Discov…

@lisidaniel is this a reference to the girl that repairs your car (the one that explodes if a tire taps a stalk of wheat at the side of the road when landing in the endgame) in Final Fantasy XV
