I have a head-canon that the longer he lives on Erid the more he starts to tone his voice to the eridians music-language and so if he WERE to meet a human some forty years later he has a very very very strange accent that makes it difficult to understand him.

@GracesLiberty Yes same!!! Like I love the idea that he also starts wearing braces/gloves so he can mimic the noises they make by clicking their fingers (how rocky always clicks his fingers when nervous made me think of that) and their goodbyes and such!

@lstTurtle Now my linguist brain wonders what his English would sound like after many years of having zero exposure to it. We sound like we do because we basically copy each other. He doesn’t have that anymore, so his speech patterns and how he understands English would absolutely change.

@GracesLiberty Yeah! That’s why I got the headcanon. I think he more so does it for tone indicators because he genuinely isn’t capable of speaking Eridian but that it leaves its mark over time

@lstTurtle Well in the book, once he was on Erid, he was actually humming Eridian language part of the time, suggesting he had started transitioning to thinking in Eridian. Humans can’t physically make Eridian sounds, but humming might be his way of doing it.
