New blog post! What is WebRTC? Why does it need ‘Signalling’? Read this to understand what WebRTC and Signalling is. Written in simple words that (I hope) should help you get a good mental model for how it all works blog.nirbheek.in/2023/07/webrtc…

@xclaesse @thiblahute I'll admit the confusion was somewhat justified though, I could have been clearer but I'll blame the lack of characters :)

@xclaesse @thiblahute Hrm you seem confused yes :P I think by C version you mean webrtcbin, which is very much not archived, webrtcsink is simply a rust wrapper around it. webrtcsink was up until now a project on Centricular's github, it has been moved to gst-plugins-rs and the gh was archived :)

@mathieu_du @amilotech It does because unlike freedom of movement for instance, freedom of speech relies on other peoples willing participation as listeners. Same with freedom of religion, you don't need anyone else to share your faith

The original meaning of free speech is about being able to express your views without government retribution. The colloquial meaning has come to be something akin to 'I have the right to say anything anywhere'. @elonmusk seems to subscribe to the colloquial meaning.

@cfkschaller @amilotech Gotcha, my point is that that has no impact on the definition of free speech, colloquial or otherwise. Note that others make the argument that the current brand of moderation is driving people away from the platform.

@mathieu_du @amilotech The point was that if you do away with all moderation in the name of free speech you might actually just cause people to leave and thus rendering the free speech meaningless

@cfkschaller @amilotech That's obviously true, but that doesn't say anything about the accurate definition of free speech, just like the definition of freedom of movement isn't informed by the fact that it is worthless if you are stuck in a cage.

@mathieu_du @amilotech The point is that freedom of speech is a right that is only valuable if there is someone around to listen. Sure you have 100% freedom of speech if you are alone on a island, but I assume ranting to yourself is not something you see as highly worthwhile.

@sdroege_ @kirushyk Right, loop label removes the possibility that you add a new level of nesting and forget to update the break depth, don't read too much into it I was mostly making a bad pun tbh

@mathieu_du @kirushyk Not very different from break/continue with loop label in Rust though. But there it's not really a problem because of how everything else works while in C that would seem like a new kind of footgun.

Who thought that it would be a good idea in C to use `break` for both loops and `switch` statements. Not confusing at all when having a loop containing a `switch` and using `break` and `continue` inside and outside the `switch` 🤪

@sdroege_ we can change C and allow a way to specify how deep to break out, something like: break 2;

@mathieu_du @cfkschaller No, it just means that if you’re talking to someone and they walk away, you don’t have a right to drag them back and make them listen.

@cfkschaller I don't get it, by your definition we couldn't ever speak when someone's within earshot?

The problem with the colloquial meaning though is that it runs afoul with the well articulated cocondrum "A person's freedom ends where another person's freedom begins", or in this case my freedom of speech ends at your ear.
