@GiggukAZ There are parts of the show that are excellent, but the premise demands Johan be terrifying and compelling, and he is neither. I got tired of being told how evil this character was only to watch him be an under-realized Hannibal Lector wannabe I dropped the show halfway through.

@GiggukAZ Monster is overrated. The show constantly tells us how Johan's a master manipulator and a tactical genius and a brutal psychopath, but we never see him be those things. His plans just work because he's "so smart" and people just obey him because he's "so charismatic".

I'M LOOKING FOR YOUR HOTTEST ANIME TAKES. But don't just give a simple "This show is mid", I want to know WHY. I'll be judging the hottest ones live tomorrow.

@MikeDrucker I left in awe and pretty sure I'd just witnessed what would happen if Baz Luhrman directed a Niel Breen script.

Megalopolis feels like the cutscenes you’d see if Hideo Kojima made SimCity

@MN_DnD_Unicorn They made the "we can fix him" joke so many times about a villain that I made a subsystem that let them slowly peel back 7 layers of psychological defense mechanisms to lay bare and force him to confront his core trauma and reject villainy. I called it "Pathosfinder".

Very excited to move on to the Silmillarion and be reminded exactly how much Feanor ruined everything.

And the Appendicies really show where his priorities lay: like 5 pages for Arwen and Aragorn and like 30 for how to pronounce Sindarin correctly. Man knew what he was really here to do, and that was to write the word dipthong enough times to make it lose all meaning.

Man I've seen the LotR movies probably 10 times since I last read the books like, 20 years ago and while I can't really say I'm shocked by it, I'm still surprised at how much the movie versions totally overwrote my memory of the books.

An aside: I love all the little songs and poems but halfway through the worms in my brain caused me to start hearing them as sung by Tom Waits and now I can't hear them any other way.

It very much succeeds at the goal of being a modern (at the time) fairy-story for kids. It's quick, it's straightforward, and it's pleasant to read all the way through. I love LotR (and am re-reading it next), but it definitely has its plodding moments.

Finally got round to reading The Hobbit. The biggest surprise was how remarkably *fast* it goes. What in LotR would be 60 pages of lunches under trees and fordings of streams is wrapped up in "and then they walked for 2 weeks to the next point of interest." It's great.
