@KenLayne On a recent visit to Finland I discovered there is a band there called Texas Oil so this may still be a thing

The only place I ever went where being a Southerner was completely welcomed was early ‘90s Europe. Fanatics for country music & rockabilly, rebel flags & Elvis posters, cowboy hats & extra-pointy cowboy boots. If you could sing a couple Johnny Cash songs, everything was free!

@dustingetz a very basic practical question: It sounds like the paren matching issue with code models is long gone, did you need to use clojure-mcp or similar to improve this or was it just a non issue?

Claude Code has allowed me to pull forward a huge amount of Hyperfiddle product work in the last 8 days that we just weren't getting to because the core dev team has been so saturated with the Electric and HFQL infrastructure. Realistically I was expecting to do these product experiments in Q3 2026 and in 2027, based on projecting (with dismay!) our actual rate of progress, which has always been too slow and drawn out due to the research nature of the work. But instead I was able to drive these experiments from blurry concept to functioning MVP in about 25 hours. (1) we are launching some stuff soon, our stack is incredible to develop with, I cannot wait to reveal our actual product hypothesis (2) Claude Code is incredible, it is an indispensable tool for thought, it is worth thousands per month over the measly $100 I pay. We are using Claude to deliver clear, hard, indisputable value in a complex, research-grade codebase, containing frontier CS idioms that human developers can barely understand, the rampup time for our codebases are many months even for a very senior engineer due to needing to upskill in so many fields – functional effect concurrency, differential dataflow, compilers macros and clojure/script internals, category theoretic code (HFQL the object query language is implemented as a coalgebra over a cofree comonad, and the Navigator UI is a cofree transformer over the HFQL AST). Yeah. Claude understands that. (3) In addition to core abstraction work, we are using Claude at every layer of the stack - core bug diagnosis and fix delivery, userland product design work and mvp delivery, devops and monorepo build / artifact management. (4) A great number of very senior engineers are currently disoriented and misunderstand where the frontier is. They are about to face a brutal readjustment. Last week I broke down and wept in front of my therapist. A nuclear bomb has been detonated, the event has already occurred, and now an invisible shockwave is propagating through the world. When a disruption event this large occurs, it triggers a war. World War 1 was caused by the industrial revolution and the steam engine enabling the construction of dreadnaught class battleships, the balance of power shifted and the boundaries of nations were redrawn. The Intelligence War is coming. Brace for impact.

@HelsiginSanomat I could imaging Oura being held up by some US commentators as evidence of a EU->US corporate "defection" and ammunition against tech regulation in the US. We shall see. Here is the HS article: hs.fi/visio/art-2000…

@HelsiginSanomat The million dollar question for people who follow tech policy is, how much of U.S. outperformance of European tech is down to lax regulation vs other factors? Tech investors have their answer (a lot) but there are many other differences between the markets

Oura is Finland's most valuable growth company by revenue and market cap and "a national treasure" as the American CEO puts it. It's also now officially a US company with its operational HQ there. While insisting it is still Finnish at heart. Hmm. @HelsiginSanomat :

@MattWelch Napoleon was known for loving his rotisserie chicken. And, like the modern man at the supermarket, Naploeon knew better than to spend half his workday cooking food. The cooks do that, and at the supermarket they do it very well & it costs $7 or $8.

Re: rotisserie chickens, here's something that took me until my 50s to discover: Just roast the damn chicken yourself! Fresher/yummier! Whole birds are inexpensive; then you can spice it to your preferences (butter!), stuff & side-roast various cheap veggies. Leftovers for days.

There is so much potential to cover the intersection of national security, foreign affairs, and tech right now — kudos to Sharon, she’s just the person to create something innovative

It's a hard week to announce I'm leaving a job voluntarily, but after four great years at The Wall Street Journal, it's time. I have a book in the works and plans for a new media venture. For now, I'm an Omidyar Network Reporter in Residence. There's a future for journalism.

@Fastmail Your API is down. What's the point of having a 'Report an issue' that leads to a Support page(support.fastmail.com/support/) that won't load if your API is down? For fucks sake people... Paid product.

the voice bot said “I’d be happy to make your reservation for you, I’ll text you a link to our reservation system! See you on the 29th!” and it was a link that says they don’t accept reservations 👍

Just had my first experience with an synthesized voice "AI" answering the phone at a business (called to make a restaurant reservation) and it resulted in the bot texting me a link to OpenTable that doesn't work 👍

@nyc311 You're not supposed to call 911 about all dangerous situations - "Call 911 to report an emergency situation or condition that might cause danger to life or personal property." -NYC911 If it's 911 level why do you say you need 30 days to fix it?
