This scenario opens the door for themed or genre-based app stores, allowing niche games to flourish without being overshadowed by the generalized market. New storefronts could emerge, with platforms like Netflix or LinkedIn innovating ways to attract and engage users. This transformation offers a chance to re-empower gamers and redefine app store dynamics. -> Speaking of mobile, Microsoft also has plans to launch a mobile app store and they're not alone. Sony is also entering the mobile arena. I'm keen to see what happens as Sony isn't powerful in the mobile space (given their current lack of mobile titles and studios). But what they do have is a treasure trove of content and IP. -> Most existing app stores prioritize ads over useful recommendations due to the abundance of games and limited user attention. Platforms often give prime ad locations to buyers, worsening discoverability. Since 2017, Apple's App Store has shifted to an editorial focus, unlike Steam, which offers a fairer display of games based on sales and user-driven recommendations. Google's app store prioritizes sponsored content, while Apple's emphasizes editorial content. However, a shift is emerging with the rise of alternative app stores from Epic Games, Sony, and Xbox, setting a new direct-to-consumer trend. Persisting Worlds -> Netflix has introduced Nextworld on Roblox, a digital theme park featuring beloved Netflix franchises like Stranger Things, One Piece, and Rebel Moon, with Jurassic World: Chaos Theory coming soon. This immersive platform allows users to explore pixelated versions of their favorite shows, such as navigating the Upside Down or adventuring with Luffy. Unlike typical transmedia content, these live service game experiences promise high user engagement and retention. Fans drawn in by one show may stay to explore others, creating multiple streams of inbound traffic and extending their engagement beyond traditional viewing hours. This marks a pivotal moment in film IP, transforming "consumable hours" into continuous interaction and enjoyment. Source -> Disney allows Fortnite creators to use its IP to make games, realizing the dream of user-generated content (UGC). While Disney is notoriously protective of its IP, this move could lead to tightly controlled UGC. The key takeaway is to observe how Disney approves and polices UGC content, as many games aim to create IP that evolves into UGC platforms. Studying Disney's approach could provide valuable insights into managing IP in UGC environments. -> YouTube has launched YouTube Playables with 75 casual games, expanding its role in gamers' playflow. Although currently focused on casual titles, it’s likely YouTube will offer more core games, aligning with its gameplay-watching demographic. Owned by Google, YouTube may integrate gameplay viewing with playable demos and direct game downloads, bridging content and gameplay in a seamless experience. -> Discord is refocusing on gaming, seizing opportunities as other platforms deplatform incumbents. Initially a gamer hub, Discord has expanded into other areas but is now adding features like questing to engage and grow gaming communities. With games like Tatsumeeko and sandbox builders emerging on the platform, Discord is becoming a key space for both casual and AA-quality games. As a “third place” outside home and work, Discord's renewed gaming focus could solidify its role as the primary gathering spot for gamers. Call Outs -> A recent survey of 1,000 gamers shows that YouTube is the leading platform for game discovery, with 64% of gamers finding new games there, compared to 36% on TikTok. Conversely, Twitter ranks as one of the least trusted sources. -> LiftOff report reveals that the average cost per install (CPI) across ad types is about $2. -> GameAnalytics reports average retention rates for North American games: mid-core games have Day 1 (D1) at 30%, Day 7 (D7) at 8%, and Day 28 (D28) at 2.5%, while casual games have similar D1 at 30%, with D7 at 7% and D28 at 2%. In Asia, retention is lower, with D1 at 25% and D7 and D28 about half of North American rates. Median session time is 4 minutes 45 seconds, even for core genres like RPG and Strategy, suggesting shorter gameplay loops.
