Nigeria’s Class Delusion
The degree of classism one witnesses in Nigeria is paradoxical for a country where social mobility is so fluid. You can count on the fingers of your hands the number of wealthy families in Nigeria that can survive without government patronage. That’s why it becomes confusing when you see classist behaviour at public and private engagements from beneficiaries of our rentier system.
The chances of the same Nigerian you look down upon as materially inferior rising to your level are just as high as your chances of falling down the social ladder with a change of government.
The proportion of wealthy Nigerians who neither have the enterprise nor the credentials to sustain their wealth without government patronage is higher than those who possess the business acumen or intellect to thrive on their own, or even function at the top in new businesses or professions.
Every change of government in this country reduces a portion of the elite to struggling reality after a few months or years, while creating a new set of nouveau riche—and that’s frightening. This explains the desperation of some political actors to re-enter the system after leaving office or after the end of their government, seeking to remain relevant enough to sustain patronage.
The funniest thing about this country is that if you go back just one generation in the so-called super-rich families, there is no history of wealth, wealth creation, enterprise, or even professional accomplishment behind their sudden riches. Yet, these same families end up boastful, looking down on the very position they occupied just a generation ago—a position they could easily return to if their breadwinners fall out with the ruling elite.
I went to school with some children of the old money, and I watched them struggle to pay school fees, sometimes borrowing my car just to impress a girl. Nothing humbles my expectations about life more than witnessing such a lifestyle. I grew up reading about their parents’ wealth, and the ashes of that glory are enough reason to remain humble.
There is no level of wealth that time cannot erode. As breadwinners, your prayer should be to equip your dependents with the values to recognise that their privilege is fleeting and to prepare for the future—understanding that there is no absolute guarantee they will make it.

Every time I’ve watched England Under-21s train at home or abroad over the past five years, Ashley Cole was out there early, laying out the balls and cones (pic below), discussing the session with the head coach Lee Carsley. He gave individual instruction to defenders like Levi Colwill and Tino Livramento. They spoke highly of Cole’s counsel and desire to improve them as players. His work ethic and humility inspired them.
In matches, Cole would sort the subs with the fourth official. No airs or graces, even though Cole was a genuine superstar as a player. He was the most consistent of the Golden Generation, England’s greatest ever left-back, seventh on his country’s all-time appearance list with 107 caps, winner of seven trophies with Arsenal, nine with Chelsea. He stood up to Cristiano Ronaldo and Arjen Robben. He nailed his two shootout penalties in the 2008 and 2012 UCL finals. He was an elite competitor and winner.
After retiring at 38, Cole could have played golf or gone into punditry. Instead, he’s built a coaching career. Along with some other reporters, I helped Cole do the media module of his Pro Licence at St George’s Park. Cole's attention to detail and desire to deliver in his second career was very clear to us.
Cole worked his way up, assisting Frank Lampard at Derby, coaching in Chelsea’s academy when Lampard went to the Bridge, and then assisting Lampard at Everton. He assisted Wayne Rooney at Birmingham City. He also assisted Carsley in his six games as caretaker of England’s seniors before becoming a full-time FA coach.
Cole, 45, now takes on his first managerial role – at Cesena in Serie B. It’s only until the end of June but an experience, an education and with the possibility of a longer stay. Good luck to Cole. He’s earned the opportunity. He’s grafted for it.

My wife's family calls themselves everyday! I mean everyday. Brother calling sister, mum and dad speaking to everyone every single day.
My own family na Giran! If there's no cause then there's no point. We only call each other when it's necessary.
When we got married, she was like you've not spoken to my parents this month - hehehehe 😂 I said what's the occasion? She was are you not supposed to call to greet?
I said I've not greeted my dad in 3 months
Now she calls and hands me the phone, I greet them well and return the phone. Everyone knows we are from different backgrounds but the love they have for & me for them is everlasting.
Anytime I am around them na balling from dawn to dusk but that call to greet, e hard me baje baje.
So my sister, call them and hand your good husband the phone he will greet them well.
