A coconut crab can pinch almost as hard as a lion bites. It weighs about as much as a housecat. So handing one a nut to crack is like hiring a wrecking ball to open your mail. And the claw is the tame part. Scientists in Okinawa measured the squeeze in 2016. They caught 29 wild coconut crabs and had each one clamp down on a steel sensor. The little ones barely registered. The biggest in the group bit down with 400 pounds of force. On the largest crabs ever found, it climbs to around 740. The lead scientist, Shin-ichiro Oka, said that pound for pound the crab is about ninety times stronger than its own body weight. Built the same way, he worked out, a person could crush things with six tons of force. He found this out in person. A crab grabbed his hand twice and would not let go, and he later called those few minutes eternal hell. Only one animal on land out-grips it. A saltwater crocodile bites about five times harder than the crab can pinch. A lion is roughly an even match, and everything else, leopards, wolves, most bears, comes in lower. The claw is the famous part. The rest of the animal is stranger. A coconut crab is the biggest land relative of insects, spiders, and crabs on Earth, with legs spreading close to three feet, about the size of a small dog. It can live forty to sixty years, far longer than your dog ever will. It climbs twenty feet up a palm tree and can drag something as heavy as a ten-year-old kid. And for an animal named after coconuts, it barely touches them, going instead for fruit, rotting wood, dead animals, and other crabs. After it sheds its old shell, it even eats that. Two things about this creature sound invented. They are not. First, it cannot swim. Hold a grown coconut crab underwater for an hour and it drowns, because somewhere down the line it swapped its gills for lungs and started breathing air the way we do. Second, it hunts. A biologist from Dartmouth once filmed one climb a tree in the dark, grab a sleeping seabird, snap its wing, and haul it to the ground. Within twenty minutes, five more crabs followed the smell of blood. They spent hours pulling the bird apart. On islands crowded with these things, the birds have quietly stopped nesting on the ground. Which brings us back to that nut. A coconut crab's claw is body armor and a weapon, grown by a soft creature that gave up its shell and had to get dangerous to survive. Cracking a walnut is probably the most boring thing it will ever do with it.

When there’s an accident in Ogun State, call the Ogun State hotline FIRST before dialing 112. 112 is a short code, but the response time is not the same. 112 is a federal emergency line. They’ll do a lot of rerouting before they can locate you. The Ogun State emergency service will locate you quickly because the operators know everywhere in the state. {If you need proof that this happened, demand it, I’ll provide it} Just take the information. Nigerian Student, One Other D+e After Giving Plasma at For-Profit Collection Centers. Health Canada Begins Investigation Two people, including 22-year-old Nigerian student Rodiyat Alabede, have d+ed after donating plasma at Winnipeg centres that pay for donations, CBC News reports. The d+aths, which occurred in October 2025 and January 2026, are under review by Health Canada. The federal regulator confirmed receiving reports of fatal adverse reactions in plasma donors but said it has not established a link between the donations and the d+aths. The company operating the centres, Grifols, stated it has “no reason to believe” the d+aths are connected to plasma collection. Alabede d+ed on Oct. 25 after attending an appointment at the Grifols Plasma Donation Centre on Taylor Avenue. “She was always happy. She had so many dreams, especially when she came to Canada,” said close friend Mary Ann Chika. “She held a big place in my heart.” Originally from Nigeria, Alabede moved to Winnipeg in 2022 to study at the University of Winnipeg with aspirations of becoming a social worker and helping people with disabilities, Chika said. Chika identified Alabede at the hospital after she was pronounced d+ad. She said doctors shared limited information, only confirming that Alabede’s heart stopped while giving plasma. “And before she arrived at the hospital, she had already passed,” Chika said. The second reported fatal reaction occurred on Jan. 30, 2026, at Grifols’ Innovation Drive location. Health Canada did not provide further details due to privacy laws. Health Canada continues to assess both cases as part of its review of plasma donor safety.
