Addison Melody Marie McC 🌈(c2012-2025)🌈Elegant, regal, sophisticated, fashion plate 🎀 Rescued herself on a snowy day. Shy & opinionated. 💙Kept trying until she reached the top...of the dryer, cat tree, table. Loved her brush. We'll miss her sweet little 'honk' of a mew. 🐾🌹

Give A Shit About Nature
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnature·
In 1947, a 57-year-old Miami journalist published a book that saved the Everglades from destruction. Marjory Stoneman Douglas spent five years researching The Everglades: River of Grass. Before she wrote it, the conventional view held that the Everglades were a worthless swamp to be drained for development. After she wrote it, the conventional view was that the Everglades were a one-of-a-kind ecosystem worth protecting. The book was published the same year Everglades National Park was established. She didn't stop there. She founded Friends of the Everglades at 79 and lobbied for protection laws into her nineties. She was still fighting development projects when she turned 100. She was functionally blind in her last decade and still giving speeches, still writing, still driving the Florida legislature insane. She lived to 108, outlasting most of the developers she fought. Her book's opening line became the foundational sentence of American wetland conservation: "There are no other Everglades in the world." She wasn't a scientist. She was a reporter who looked at something and realized nobody was telling the truth about it.

Members of our staff rescued this peregrine falcon today from a courtyard on the Upper West Side, where he likely collided with a window, suffering a wing fracture. The break, to the right ulna, was severe enough to puncture the skin. Our vet tech Eugene cleaned the wound and splinted the wing while the bird was under anesthesia, and since surgery may be necessary, we’ll be quickly sending the peregrine to our friends at The Raptor Trust. Thanks to his ankle bands, we know that this bird is 12 years old! That’s at the high end of the typical lifespan for a peregrine, so Leroy has been around the block a few times and is a fighter.🥷 Once threatened with extinction in the U.S., peregrines have rebounded in NYC and elsewhere thanks largely to environmental protections passed in the 1970s. Among them was the Endangered Species Act, which narrowly escaped being gutted yesterday in Congress. Thank you to everyone who took action to oppose the bill! Please keep this beautiful survivor in your thoughts. 📷: Suzanne Highlanf

Double OT last night… Taking shelter in the hallway tonight while the tornado sirens go off 5 times and the storm chaser is less than a mile down the road… Like can I breathe please? 😂🥲 #texashockey #stormseason #tornado

A violent tornado is passing just south of Enid Oklahoma tonight a video captured by Enid resident. It’s crazy how many people went out there to record this tornado instead of taking shelter

If you're going to have a lawn, make it red creeping thyme. It barely needs water after the first year. It tops out around 2 to 3 inches and never needs mowing. It produces a carpet of magenta flowers in summer that bees and butterflies cover like a feeding station. It smells like thyme when you walk on it, because it is thyme. It's the same genus as the culinary kind, and edible. Deer won't eat it. Rabbits won't eat it. Grass is crowded out by it. It's hardy in most of the US (zones 4 through 9), tolerates poor soil, and handles moderate foot traffic. Honest caveat: creeping thyme isn't native to North America. But neither is your lawn. Kentucky bluegrass is European. Bermuda grass is African. Every square foot of creeping thyme replacing turfgrass is net positive for pollinators, soil, and water use. If you want a fully native ground cover, look into Pennsylvania sedge for shade, pussytoes or wild strawberry for sun, and moss phlox for rocky spots. But if you're going to have a lawn, make it one that does something.

@snufflewort The date and exact moment will be etched in my brain forever. Actually, I found out myself, kept checking my chart app for my results. The doc came in about 30 secs later. I just looked at him and said 'f*cking hell'. I think he was relieved he didn't have to tell me.

My dear friends, this is the only photo I have from 2 years ago, April 23rd, the day I was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer. Completely terrified, I tweeted this photo & thousands of people responded. You’ve held me ever since. Today marks 2 years of survival! #fuckcancer

Hannibal is gradually getting better after last week's surgery. She's still not up and around yet but she's made some progress. She's crawled into my lap so she's trying. She's eating and drinking well. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.
