#WCEU honest recap for those not here, so far: § Ticket sales down 20%, with many no-shows among the 2,000 registrants. It's quieter and less crowded, with enough "white space" for relaxing (great for me). § The atmosphere is as expected: the last few months have been tough for WordPress and its users/developers due to external challenges. Combined with a bit of a recession, AI's growing influence, and search engines struggling, it's hard to find optimism. § Sponsors are full of energy as usual, investing heavily, organizing parties across town, and staffing their booths. However, footfall is low, booths are often overstaffed, and numbers are down. § After yesterday's FAIR announcement (github.com/fairpm), you can feel a clear divide. Many are redirecting their energies to alternative platforms. While diversifying could be positive, the community feels split, confused, and tired. § Talk quality has improved significantly. Rarely have I seen such an interesting WCEU schedule. This is great for attendees like me who are here to learn something new. § The absence of Automattic/WooCommerce as sponsors — and even their physical presence — is striking. It feels like a poor decision, and everyone is wondering if it was purely financial or if there's more to it. For WooCommerce, especially after their rebrand, missing this opportunity to showcase their new direction is a notable misstep.

WCEU is great, but one group is glaringly absent - and it’s not the people boycotting over the recent drama. It’s the lovely people from @automattic and @WooCommerce, who are usually a major presence at WordCamps but are almost entirely missing from #WCEU this year. I don’t know whether this means A8C has stopped valuing its employees or the community, but their absence is noticeable. I hope this is a one-off blip and we’ll see them back in force again soon.

I purposefully avoid politics on here, but... US tariffs on Canada just cost me a very long term customer who is also my primary featured testimonial. This is all so stupid.

I’m disappointed that trump admin placed the 25% tariffs. I’m disappointed that this is our governments response. I love Canada and want it to thrive. I built Canada’s biggest tech company here because I know it’s a special place. Canada thrives when it works with America together. Win by helping America win. Trump believes that Canada has not held its side of the bargain, and he set terms to prove that we still work together: get the borders under control and crack down on fentanyl dens. These are things that every Canadian wants its government to do, too. These are not crazy demands, even if they came from an unpopular source. These tariffs are going to be devastating to so many people’s lives and small businesses. Action has to be judged based on what it leads to, not how good it sounds or feels. Leadership is about doing what’s right, not what is popular. And hitting back will not lead to anything good. America will shrug it off. Canada will decline. It’s simply the wrong choice in a possibility space where much better options would have been available.

If you wake up after 4-5 hours of sleep & find it hard to go back to sleep, it’s likely you offset your primary sleep drive (due to adenosine buildup etc). The next 2-3hrs of would-be sleep is when learning associated brain changes occur. 3 things help in this scenario. (Thread)
