SpaceX founder Elon Musk announced that the company expects to receive its federal launch license in the coming days, marking the final hurdle before the much-anticipated launch. The space exploration company has been waiting for the completion of a federal environmental review led by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (UFWS) for months. Musk shared optimistic news on November 13, stating, "Was just informed that approval to launch should happen in time for a Friday launch." The upcoming orbital flight attempt will feature stainless-steel prototypes: Starship SN25 and the Super Heavy Booster 9. Engineers at the Starbase facility in Boca Chica Beach, Texas, have been working diligently to prepare for the ambitious launch. During the second test flight, the Super Heavy Booster will lift off from the Starbase facility and ascend to an altitude of at least 100 kilometers, commonly known as the "Karman Line," signifying the boundary of space. Approximately 2 minutes and 41 seconds into the flight, the booster will separate from the spacecraft, landing in the Gulf of Mexico. The Starship will continue its trajectory, flying halfway around Earth before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean near the coast of Kauai, Hawaii. The entire flight test is expected to last around 1 hour and 30 minutes if it successfully reaches space. While the FAA has not yet issued a spaceflight license, a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) has been posted, confirming the planned liftoff on Friday. Additionally, Cameron County has approved temporary road closures for Boca Chica Beach, with launch timeframe scheduled from 12:00 midnight to 2:00 p.m. Central Time on November 17, with backup launch opportunities on November 18 and 19 at the same time. However, the dynamic nature of launch schedules makes it important to note that plans are subject to change. The primary goal of this second flight test is to demonstrate the capabilities of Starship's two-stage design and gather crucial data on its performance in flight. SpaceX aims to expedite the development of the rocket-ship based on the insights gained from this mission. SpaceX has made significant upgrades to the Starship for this flight, including a hot-stage separation system and a new electronic Thrust Vector Control system for Super Heavy Raptor engines. The company has also reinforced the pad foundation and added a steel water deluge system under the launch tower to deflect the engine’s flames upon liftoff, among other enhancements. A notable upgrade is the installation of a "hot staging" ring on the Super Heavy booster, also known as a "vented interstage". This addition allows for the ignition of the Starship's Raptor engines while some of the Super Heavy booster engines are still firing, ensuring a seamless transition during stage separation.
