A few things I ask my students to do when writing reviews: 1. Remove all adverbs 2. Try removing all adjectives 3. You are not the judge -- you are either the prosecutor or the lawyer. 4. Be evidence-based. 5. Be kind -- there's someone's <1y of life behind it.

This is a paper I am an author on (ICCV not SA). The reviewer comments that our entire research idea is “not good” as it can’t deal with common geometric models. I thought that we showed 100+ of these so I may need to relearn geometry..

Wow.... the second time in my 15y in academia when I get literally "your research idea is not good" in the review. As a senior, I brush this off, but I am sorry for the student who had to see this. We need more kindness :) You can always say the same thing in a nicer way.

SIGGRAPH just came out with grants for early career folks attending this years conference: siggraph.org/news/acm-siggr…. The deadline is very tight, so do spread the word to all eligible folks and apply yourself if eligible..
