These are beguinages, a haven for peace and quiet in the heart of cities. @archi_tradition and I have collaborated on an article talking about their origins and their importance in cities across Flanders and the Netherlands It’s dropping tomorrow morning👀 Don’t miss out ;) @architectureandtradition?r=5fxenh&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=profile&shareImageVariant=blur" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">substack.com/@architecturea

The Low Countries really perfected the concept of “villages within cities” and then just stopped building them

@billythalheimer Love it. Scale with smaller versions inter island within their country. No reason I shouldn’t be able to hop on one tomorrow from Amsterdam to London.

Getting from archipelago to archipelago is one thing - But intra-archipelago travel is just as important Routes within Hawaii, Guam, etc are too short to fly & make maintenance the main cost driver This is where seagliders shine: electric means low maintenance and low cost
The Mind Scourge@TheMindScourge

United also continues the tradition of the “island hopper”, one of the world’s great flight experiences It flies a few times a week and for several of the islands is the only regularly scheduled flight in operation. A flight mechanic accompanies each trip, along with an assortment of spare parts as many of the airports are so remote no repair facilities are readily available

Front yards should be considered place-savers for Auxiliary Commercial Units (ACUs) because what else are you going to do with that front yard except mow it? Why not make money there?

@Boenau @TT_Fietser Cyclists and pedestrians avoid roundabouts because they are difficult and dangerous to use. So you need to control for this bias. And yes the Dutch (and some other countries) have better models but those are not typical.

When ROUNDABOUTS replace TRAFFIC LIGHTS pedestrian crashes ⬇️ 30-40% bicycle crashes ⬇️ 10% fatal crashes ⬇️ 90% injury crashes ⬇️ 76% But since traffic engineers have come to like roundabouts, bike/ped advocates figure they must be bad. 🤦‍♂️

“The Netherlands has vacant buildings with enough space to house all 377,000 residents of Utrecht, the country's fourth largest city. The empty space is roughly equivalent to 200k standard new apartments” What’s easier? Building 200,00 new units? Or working on solving vacancy?

We often hear: build build build! Yes, more supply for housing is a critical piece of the affordability puzzle. Yet, more and more we see that this isn’t simply a supply problem (we didn’t wake up with millions more in demand). It’s a policy issue: nltimes.nl/2025/10/21/net…

One way cities can become more family friendly is to incorporate a restaurant with a patio into their park playgrounds. I went to South Bend's new Howard Park with little kids recently & we let them run around before/after eating while the parents talked at the table. So nice.

Let's be honest - there is a period of 6-12 months when you simply cannot take most toddlers to a restaurant and have anything resembling a normal sit-down meal experience. I assume this is when most ipad kids are born.

Here’s something really important for everyone to understand. If we design our cities for cars only, they fail everyone, including drivers. If we design our cities with many great CHOICES in how to get around, they work better for everyone, including drivers. Spread the word.

the city of san francisco (de campeche) now has the first trackless train operating in north america!!! it's a chinese bus, guided by optical sensors, that is designed to resemble a train exterior & interior. but branded as light rail (tren ligero), of course.
