A lot of the entertainers of this generation were very heavy smokers and drinkers and lots died early deaths as a result. Corbett was a 60 a day man and made it to 57 before a heart attack got him.

In Barbara Castle’s memoirs she puts utterly vast emphasis on things like pride in cleanliness - she mentions her mother scrubbing the path outside her house until it shined - as hugely important in the working class Yorkshire communities where she grew up.

@lennylaw The UK isn't a secular nation, either. It has one dominant Christian sect, which enjoys special privileges - bishops in the Lords, funding for CofE schools, etc. - and its "defender" is the country's monarch. (Spain, while largely Roman Catholic, has no official state religion.)

British Muslims are extremely reasonable people. We demand no special privileges that impact on other communities, we only demand our rights as citizens just like everyone else in the UK. Our only red line is that we insist on the right to freely practise our religion within the confines of UK law. And given that the UK, as a secular nation which allows freedom of religious worship, already accords us that right there should be no issue. Any problems with Muslims here are being stirred up by racists and Islamophobes.
