His whānau have served in defence of Australia over many years, and I’ve had the honour of marching alongside Ray on Anzac occasions such as the Coloured Diggers March over many years. He understands service, sacrifice, and what this day truly represents. What happened this morning at the ANZAC Dawn Service in Sydney — where Ray, as an elder, was booed while welcoming veterans, serving personnel, their families, and the wider community to Country — was nothing short of a disgrace. Anzac Day is about respect. It’s about honouring those who served and those who gave everything. That includes acknowledging the first peoples of the land on which these ceremonies are held. To show disrespect in that moment, to an elder carrying out that role with dignity, undermines everything Anzac stands for. Stand strong, Ray. Many of us stand with you.
