From Second Class Lower to PhD: How MT Scholar Edith Muolokwu Defied the Odds
There’s something powerful about people who refuse to let one moment define them, and this is the story of Edith Muolokwu.
Edith, a 2020 MT Scholar, began her journey studying Pharmacy at University of Port Harcourt, where she graduated with a Second Class Lower (CGPA: 3.41/5.00).
For many, that moment brings doubt. It can shrink your ambitions or make you settle for less. But Edith made a different choice. She didn’t ignore the reality of where she was, she simply refused to let it define where she could go. She kept preparing and showing up for herself, even when there was no clear evidence that things would turn around.
Then came a turning point.
She sat for the GRE and delivered an outstanding performance: a perfect 170 in Quantitative and 167/170 in Verbal. That result didn’t just strengthen her profile, it reset the narrative.
Soon after, she secured a fully funded PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at North Dakota State University. And once she got there, she didn’t just exist, she grew. From earning recognitions like the Dean’s Scholarship to taking on leadership roles within the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, Edith steadily became the kind of person her younger self was still trying to imagine.
Her work pushed into meaningful territory, developing innovative therapeutic strategies for Alzheimer’s disease, with the goal of improving patient outcomes. And even beyond the lab, she kept expanding her impact.
As co-founder of the Give Her A Chance Africa Foundation, Edith has helped provide free drugs and testing services for people living with HIV/AIDS and cancer, ensuring her success translates into real impact for others.
Today, we’re proud to share that Edith has successfully defended her PhD thesis at North Dakota State University.
What makes her story stand out isn’t just the PhD or the accolades. It’s the quiet, consistent decision to not let one chapter define the entire book.
So, here’s a reminder: growth isn’t perfect, and it’s rarely linear. Keep moving, even when it’s easier to stop. Build a life that reflects possibility, and refuse to remain where life first placed you.
Congratulations, Edith. The MT Scholarships Community is super proud of you.
