Happy vernal equinox! 🍀 Today marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. After today, the Sun will shine more directly on the Northern Hemisphere than on the Southern Hemisphere until the autumnal equinox.

This was a very good question from Ryan - why does the Universe on the largest scales resemble the Universe on the smallest scales? The answer, for the case of the distribution of galaxies on the sky, is that the pattern we see has its origin in quantum mechanical fluctuations during inflation - before the hot big bang (at least according to inflationary cosmology, which is the most widely accepted model at present). Hail Mary is a very good film by the way :-)

Learning from the best, @ProfBrianCox. Experience #ProjectHailMary on the biggest screen possible, in cinemas now.

“There can be no such creature.” When chemist Dan Shechtman discovered a new type of crystal in 1982 he could hardly believe it. His quasicrystals were considered to be impossible and he faced much criticism before they were finally accepted by the scientific community.

A little cosmic sparkle for 2026! This glimpse of Westerlund 1, a super star cluster in our galaxy was captured by @NASAWebb. It’s made up of stars between 50,000 and 100,000 times the mass of our Sun, all packed within a region less than six light-years across. This cluster is like a natural lab, helping scientists learn more about the formation and evolution of stars.

"Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you—all of you on the good Earth" Astronauts orbited the Moon for the first time in history on Christmas Eve, 1968. On their fourth orbit, they captured the sight of the Earth rising over the Moon's horizon, a photo dubbed "Earthrise."

Highlighting the first person to discover evidence of radioactivity, Henri Becquerel, who was born on 15 December 1852. In 1896 Becquerel discovered radioactivity. This inspired Marie and Pierre Curie to further investigate the phenomenon. They examined many substances and minerals for signs of radioactivity. They found that the mineral pitchblende was more radioactive than uranium and concluded that it must contain other radioactive substances. From it they managed to extract two previously unknown elements, polonium and radium, both more radioactive than uranium. Becquerel shared the 1903 physics prize with Pierre Curie and Marie Curie, née Skłodowska for their discovery of radioactivity. Discover more: bit.ly/3n8Lvtf
