Virginia K9 Knight, who gave his life in the line of duty, is the second law enforcement K9 lost in 2026. K9 Knight was murdered when he was shot and killed while responding to a domestic call in Midlothian. Around 4:40 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call from a female requesting assistance as a man was firing a gun inside her home. When officers arrived, the suspect shot at the officers, killing K9 Knight. Two officers were transported to local hospitals with critical wounds but are expected to recover. The suspect was also shot in return fire, sustaining minor wounds. Knight, a 5-year-old German Shepherd/Malinois mix, had served with the Chesterfield County Police Department for four years. Knight was born in Slovakia and joined the department at roughly 1 year old. Throughout his career, CCPD said he assisted in tracking and apprehension operations.
