What’s happened off the coast near Galle is extremely serious. Reports indicate over 100 Iranian personnel missing after what appears to be a submarine attack just outside our waters, a major security concern. If military activity of this scale is happening so close to Sri Lanka, the government cannot treat it as “someone else’s problem.” Were we aware of submarine movements? Were our surveillance systems functioning? Or were we completely in the dark? Under the Merchant Shipping Act, the Sri Lanka Navy has rightly launched search and rescue operations following the distress call. Their swift response reflects the Navy’s proud tradition of service and vigilance at sea. If confirmed, it signals that tensions far beyond our region are now touching these waters. Incidents like this remind us that Sri Lanka sits at the heart of the Indian Ocean and must remain vigilant in safeguarding maritime security, humanitarian response, and the stability of our region. My thoughts are with all those affected and their families.

I read. I think your account is false on very many points. I will really briefly tackle some here. You say Sri Lankan stopped killing after Prabhakaran, whereas Israel kept going after Sinwar. That is a deliberate conflation. Sri Lanka stopped the heavy weapons after decimating the LTTE entirely and herding 300k people into concentration camps. It was not about one man. It was the entire liberation movement (part of the reason why the NE remains occupied almost 17 years later). And a reminder, torture and abuse of Tamils continues to this day. See latest UN report on sexual violence for example. The violence has changed, not ended. The war ended in a genocide. Imagine if Israel had taken over the entire Gaza Strip and entirely eliminated all Palestinian resistance. And then called elections across the entire region after. Is that a ‘political solution’? More importantly, listen to Tamil, Palestinian and even Israel voices. All can see the comparisons. Which is why Palestinians have voiced solidarity with Tamils and vice versa. As a Sinhala/Sri Lankan blogger, you should really reflect on this more.

Sinhala nationalists love pretending Tamils are "inherently violent." Let's walk through what actually happened before any Tamil fighter picked up a gun. 1956: Sinhala Only Act. Tamil language erased from public life. Jobs stripped. Protests ignored. 1958: First major pogrom. Hundreds of Tamils killed by Sinhala mobs. The state watched. Did nothing. 1965: Dudley-Chelvanayakam pact signed. Promised Tamil language rights and regional autonomy. Shredded under Sinhala nationalist pressure within months. 1972: New Constitution. Buddhism declared "foremost." Tamil Hindus and Christians officially second class. 1970s: Standardization policies. Tamil students needed higher marks than Sinhalese for university. Education deliberately blocked. 1974: Jaffna conference. Peaceful cultural gathering. Police stormed in. Killed nine people. Killers promoted. No inquiry. No justice. 1977: Another wave of pogroms. More Tamils killed. More homes burned. 1981: Jaffna Library burned. Army and police stood by while mobs torched 97,000 books. Centuries of Tamil culture reduced to ash. 1983: Black July. 3,000+ Tamils slaughtered in Colombo. State orchestrated. Mass rape. Looting. Burning. That's 27 years of peaceful Tamil leaders like Chelvanayakam begging, protesting, signing agreements, watching them get shredded, and getting pogroms in return. Non-violence got them mass graves and library ashes. Then Sivakumaran swallowed cyanide rather than be captured. Prabhakaran picked up a gun. Not because Tamils are inherently violent. Because the Sri Lankan state spent three decades proving non-violence was suicide. Sinhala nationalists rewrite history to make Tamils the bad guys. But Tamils tried everything else first. Every single door was slammed shut with batons, bullets, and broken promises. Own that before lecturing anyone about violence.

LTTE leaders, including Prabhakaran (from the Iyakkam/Vellalar caste), are responsible for countless deaths. LTTE terrorists were barred from entering Jaffna Tamil homes or Hindu kovils due to their internal caste discrimination. Many came from fishing and other marginalized communities, now trying to share wisdom on their behalf. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan government is recognized globally as a responsible entity.

The path forward lies in responsible diplomacy, restraint, and a renewed commitment to peace over conflict.
