The word comes from the Greek Apokalypsis, which literally means uncovering, unveiling or revealing.
That’s why the last book of the Bible is called the Book of Revelation—in Greek, it’s Apokalypsis.

I’ve been thinking this would need to happen to break the mind control. The apocalypse ends up fizzling out into a bigger liberation from liars.

If you read a lot of noir books and stuff from the 40’s/50’s it’s pretty clear that a lot of people lived in motels. Not just criminals but nurses etc. I’ve never known anyone to live in a motel. I don’t think the abundant American world was real. Life has always been dangerous.
