Feelings are reflective of inner states - they are information ideally we can use to make good decisions. However, in as far as feelings are "bottom-up" phenomena, we also need "top-down" cognitive functions to evaluate our own inner states, and use that information wisely. It can be hard to know when to "trust" one's feelings, and to know when they may be leading us astray. Part of development is to work out which is which, and also to learn and course-correct in response to the feedback we get when our perceptions and actions lead to constructive or problematic outcomes. As Karl Friston notes, we are "self-evidencing creatures" who "forage" for information in order to make active inferences about ourselves, others and the world, ideally updating our models to be more precise and acccurate. Whether or not we possess full insight into the nature of our challenges, our own psychology and even illnesses, is one of the key determinants of how we can approach growth and development. In Episode #74 of the Doorknob Comments Podcast, Fara and I discuss insight - from the softer insight about one's own personality and defenses, to the hard lack of insight - known as "anosognosia" - accompanying some psychiatric and neurological illnesses. We discuss when possible, how insight develops, and how to navigate gaps in insight and awareness. We hope you enjoy our conversation. doorknobcomments.com/episodes/insid… @DoorknobComment #psychology #mentalillness #insight
