On the morning of November 8, 1866, the Muslim Turks surrounded the Arkadi Monastery in Crete and demanded surrender. The Greeks refused and opened fire. As resistance collapsed and the Turks advanced toward the inner areas, the surviving Greeks (especially the women and children) had retreated to the former wine cellar that was used to store gunpowder and ammunition. With the agreement of those inside, and as Ottoman soldiers battered down the door of the powder room, the Greek Kostis Giaboudakishe set fire to the barrels of gunpowder. A heroic decision that human mind cannot comprehend in our days. A patriotic sacrifice. A massive explosion killed most of the people inside the room (including women and children) and many Ottoman soldiers who had gathered nearby. It also caused further destruction to the monastery. Out of 964 Greeks, approximately 846–864 were killed and 114 were taken prisoner (many of whom were later executed). Around 1,500 Muslim Turks died from the explosion and the preceding battle. The event, known in Greek as the "Holocaust of Arkadi", shocked Europe. News of hundreds of women and children choosing death over capture and enslavement by the Ottomans sparked widespread sympathy and a new wave of philhellenism (support for the Greek cause) among circles in Western Europe. The sacrifice at Arkadi became a powerful symbol of heroism, self-sacrifice, and the refusal to live under the Islamic oppression. It contributed to the momentum that eventually led to Cretan autonomy in 1898 and full union with Greece in 1913. *On the first picture you see the powder magazine today that it was the wine cellar, with the reconstruction of the explosion. *On the second picture there is a burnt cypress tree which bears a bullet from gunfire (which the arrow points to)

The Crucifixion, was a forgotten torture from Roman times, that was revived during the Ottoman period. The victims were obviously Christians, and especially in the early centuries, this method was common. However, the Muslim Turks did not use Roman crosses in the shape of a "T" or the standard cross shape. Usually, they nailed the victims to wooden ladders, X-shaped beams (like the Apostle Andrew), and even to trees. It was also common to crucify victims on the walls of conquered cities, where they would nail them up. What characterized crucifixion under Ottoman rule was the large number of nails used. In addition to the extremities (hands and feet), they would also nail the ears, the upper arms, the shoulder blades, and the thighs, taking care not to damage the vital organs so as to prolong the pain and agony. The victim died, just as in Roman times, from exhaustion, hunger, thirst, and asphyxiation, but sometimes also from hemorrhage due to the multitude of nails. As in antiquity, severe torture, mainly flogging, was a necessary prelude to the nailing. Another torture that Christians suffered at the hands of the Muslim Turks was being dragged by a galloping horse. This torture reminds us of the dead Hector, who was dragged by Achilles’ chariot as punishment for the murder of Patroclus. The only difference is that Homer’s Iliad speaks of the public humiliation of a dead body. The Turkish victims, however, were still alive.

🇹🇷🇩🇪 WHAT A DISGRACE FROM GERMANY! The matches of the Turkish National Team in the World Cup 2026 won’t be shown in free tv. 5 million Turks, the biggest minority in Germany, but yet nothing Germany does for these people. Germans can watch free tv, Turks have to pay.
