Esports to the #Olympics !?!? The Olympics hosted its first instance of Esports in 2023, starting the OES - Olympic Esports Series. The games took place in Singapore and managed to subvert the expectations of any seasoned esports goer. You won’t see any of the games that are at normal tournaments, such as CS:GO or DOTA 2 but instead VR versions of already established events. “I think it’s fair to say that we remain a sport-based and sport-focused organization,” the IOC’s sport director, Kit McConnell, told The Verge in an interview. “We’re looking to keep the Olympic Virtual Series focused around sport titles.” While this does look like the door is closed on more traditional competitive games, at least for the moment, McConnell said that the IOC had its eye on the esport scene.  In 2023, archery, baseball, chess, cycling, dance, motorsport, inshore sailing, offshore sailing, shooting, taekwondo, and tennis were the sports competed in. What games do you think we will see in the Olympics?

I'd like to speak broadly about what should be the goals and expectations of collegiate esports, the role of a coach, and the competitive landscape of collegiate esports. There is a distinct reason why you should align your university with NACE. With everything that is happening, and with no proper recognition, I thought it was important to talk about these topics. The foundations of a collegiate esports team should always be: helping students earn a degree, creating leaders, fostering career readiness, promoting health and wellness, ensuring accountability, and maintaining eligibility. While collegiate esports and esports leagues excel in many areas, they are still in the early stages of establishing these core values. Regardless of whether your team wins or loses, or is the most competitive, as a coach, you should care about your students. They gain invaluable knowledge, a sense of community, and opportunities to become the best versions of themselves. Students shouldn't be mere recruitment tools for national recognition. Titles and medals should not be the end goal but rather the icing on the cake. If you build athletes with a growth mindset, the wins will follow. You shouldn't think less of your students because they don't win, but should reorient their mindset and seek growth opportunities if they don't meet established SMART goals. You should want your students to reach their full potential. Collegiate competition doesn't matter if we don't curate these experiences around the students. Why does all of this matter? If we want esports leagues to be a stepping stone into professional esports, gain national recognition, and be sustainable, the skills and knowledge students gain in higher education will make them excel more than non-degree-seeking professional athletes. Building trust and respect between member schools will also make the league more attractive to universities and sponsors, as they align with the core values of higher education. Administrators will be more likely to fund league dues knowing they support these assertions. Measuring the success of your program starts with the process. Medals are supportive of this process. You should be asking yourself, "How am I making my athletes better?" and "Am I sending students into jobs post-graduation?" Simply creating leaders legitimizes collegiate esports as a whole on multifaceted levels. All of this to say, NACE is creating the Foundation needed to be sustainable. These core values should always come first, rather than running off and building something that is unsustainable.
