I didn't experience this myself, but it's a story told by my grandparents. When they were a young couple with their first baby, they had a tiny one-room apartment above a bar. There was an indoor stairway and a hall outside their apartment. The apartment was so small, they couldn't actually fit the crib inside. So, they had to keep the crib in the hallway and kept the door open so they could watch the crib. One night, some instinct woke my grandmother up and she saw a dark figure of a man leaning over into the crib. She screamed "Pete, the baby!" My grandfather woke and grabbed his gun. With them both looking, the dark figure just dissolved. Not ran away, just ceased to exist. I don't know what happened next, but I believe they reassessed their living arrangements.

How I saw a ghost. (Many have asked for this story.) The first time I saw a ghost was my only unambiguous sighting. I had 4 other sightings since, but they can be explained away with mental gymnastics. At the first sighting, I was 11 years old. My friends and I were fascinated by an abandoned house in the neighborhood, and we thought/hoped it was haunted. We even built a little clubhouse in the attic, where we read monster magazines and pored over our sole copy of Playboy. I mention this because I think it psychologically prepped me. One day, after dark, I was walking home in our neighborhood. A slight bit of mist was in the air; unusual for Utah. As I started down the street, lo and behold, right under a streetlight, was a misty white figure of a woman. The exact position I stood in is in the photo below from Google Street View. Of course, this is 60 years later. But unless the streetlight was moved, that’s the place. 1/5

It will increase the temperature immediately surrounding the condenser unit outside, but at most you will only feel a difference within a couple feet, or half a meter-ish for our international audience. It short circuits the local economy and creates perpetual dependency. Intervention only increases and prolongs human suffering in the name of assuaging misplaced guilt. The entire Bible has as a consistent theme the law of Sowing and Reaping, in that you cannot have the latter until you have done the former. Even in old testament law, charity required labor. Farmers were not allowed to harvest the corners of their fields so that the poor could collect the "gleanings." Leviticus 19:9-10 When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the Lord your God. If the Pope cared, he should be advocating for local business investment and lobbying governments in impoverished regions to deregulate onerous restrictions that kill private enterprise.

It's interesting to consider Pope Leo XIV's comments in light of his predecessor St. John Paul II's "Centesimus Annus," written for the 100th anniversary of "Rerum Novarum" by Pope Leo XIII.

Meeting this need not only alleviates suffering but also addresses underlying causes of geopolitical instability. I studied this in high school for debate. One of the key factors people miss when you ship food into the region and give it away for free is that makes it harder for farmers to sell their produce and eliminates the ability for new farmers to cover start up costs to respond to demand. You're literally short circuiting the local economy and creating permanent dependency to assuage your own misspent guilt. If for some reason entrepreneurship somehow manages to occur, local governments skimming aid funds will sabotage it to keep foreign aid flowing. I watched a video of an African woman's Coca-cola stand getting bulldozed because it was doing too well.

Globally we produce enough calories to support 10 billion people but due to corruption of governments that oversee distribution there is starvation. Aid that is sent is sometimes destroyed or rots in shipping containers. Need a method for these people to easily make their own food so they can control their own access.
