“Others did it too” is not a moral defence; it is a distraction. Yes, slavery existed in many places. Yes, some Africans participated in the trade. But the transatlantic slave system was industrialised, racialised, inherited, legalised, and used to build empires and wealth. Chinese railroad workers were also exploited and discriminated against, but their suffering should be acknowledged honestly — not weaponised to minimise the suffering of enslaved Africans. The crime was slavery. The lesson is justice. The excuse-making is the problem.
