Contesting your property’s assessment is a crucial role in the property tax system. It allows anyone to file an appeal with the county board and say, “I don’t think you assessed the value of my property correctly.” Oftentimes, those who appeal end up paying less in property taxes after they’ve been reassessed. But it's not always that simple. For the same reasons the South and West Side have been systemically disenfranchised, their residents are less likely to successfully appeal their property tax assessments. We need to manage our city’s budget responsibly, and not push the bill onto those who can least afford it. #chicago
