.@ZohranKMamdani and I have something huge in common — we’re both entirely focused on making life better for working people. We have very different ideas on how to do that, but I think that’s the sign of a healthy democracy: the ability to disagree civilly, debate thoughtfully, and grapple with the fact that what we’ve been doing isn’t working — even, and perhaps most importantly, when you come from the same political party. I love New York, but I’m happy to be on a flight home right now — because California, we have a whole lot of work to do.

I am deeply honored to receive the first-ever Champion of Agriculture Award from the California Farm Bureau. 🌾🏆 I did not grow up in an agricultural family, and I do not have a green thumb. But during my time in the California State Assembly, after the Great Recession in 2008, then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed selling the historic San Francisco Cow Palace to help balance the state budget. That same weekend, Cotton Rosser and Seth Doulton were hosting the Grand National Rodeo and came to my office to share the history and importance of the Cow Palace — the first District Agricultural Association in California. That conversation changed everything for me and began my agriculture journey. Since then, I have toured farms, ranches and facilities connected to more than 250 of the 400+ agricultural products grown in California and have seen firsthand the hard work and resilience of our farmers and ranchers. After COVID, the war in Ukraine, tariffs, and trade disruptions, I doubled down and co-founded (with Seth Doulton) the San Francisco Farm Bureau — the 54th chapter in CA — to help raise awareness in urban communities about why we must better support agriculture. As humans, we need 3 things: air, water, and food. Protecting the people who produce our food must be a priority. Food security is national security.
