This week, President Lorena Gonzalez represented the American Labor Movement as part of a global convening in Rome on AI and the Future of Work, sponsored by the United States, Taiwanese, Japanese, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australian Ambassadors to the Holy See. “If nations do not stand up to tech companies and fail to create strong guardrails around new technologies, it’s workers – and our jobs, our cost of living, our livelihoods, our humanity – that will suffer the most. The stakes couldn’t be higher,” she said at the convening to an audience of the Catholic Church, business leaders, AI experts, and foreign dignitaries. As the sole representative of working people at the convening, Gonzalez spoke about the importance of protecting good jobs and the dignity of work and rejecting the notion that the future of work that’s been laid out by Big Tech billionaires is inevitable.
