Times have changed since I was told I couldn’t do sports stories on my NCTJ course and there was no point anyway, as my first job was going to be as a news reporter…

The NCTJ says it has reached its target of having women make up 25% of students enrolled on NCTJ-accredited sports journalism courses. This is up from 6% in 2021/22, 14% in 2022/23 and 20% in 2023/24. CEO Joanne Forbes said it will now "move towards equal representation"

For better or for worse, all of it is part of what makes non-league football unique in my eyes 🤷♀️
And anyone who doubts that, I tell them the story of when Lingfield played Three Bridges on a Tuesday night, 16 years ago… although you really had to be there!

It did make me think about all of the things I’ve seen in non-league football over the past 16/17 years while working as a journalist 🤣
Lots of ‘handbags’, several (open) water bottle thrown, quite a few punches and a manager headbutting a player during a game.

A good Surrey derby marred by an incident of alleged racism from a spectator towards a Whyteleafe player in the aftermath of the home club’s second goal.
Then the referee got involved and somehow made the situation worse? 🫠

Has to feature at least one team our newspapers cover.
Ideally within a 70 minute drive.
Preferably not within ULEZ as I don’t think I can claim that back on expenses 🙃

I could drive to Margate… but it’s a very long way 🫣

We have newspapers in Kent, Essex, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire… but I don’t think I could get to Deal Town, Chelmsford City or Dover Athletic in 70 minutes!
