Are you on track with your PhD?

In no way am I saying that students should be absolved of their agency, of course they play a role. What I mean is I think they need reminding of their humanity, that they live human lives that come with a whole host of challenges that impact on their studies.

We've just had our mid year results and I've seen how my students equate their academic performance with their value as a person. It's worrying. They forget there's a whole context that exists that has contributed to the results they see. There's a big picture.

A reminder that we need to normalize that there really isn't a separation between the person and the academic. Who we are can't get left at the door when we put our academic hats on. They are so deeply interwoven, the personal and the academic and impact one another.

Today, we are launching a report which shows that studying a humanities degree at university gives young people vital skills which benefit them throughout their careers and prepare them for changes and uncertainty in the labour market: ox.ac.uk/news/2023-06-2…

Prof Naidoo's keynote for me emphasised that we cannot lose site of the very real human beings that make use of these tools. In what ways are we preparing them, ethically, humanly, to make use of the power of AI?

I was very honoured to be a part of this incredible Summer Institute! I think sometimes when you're in the throws of the PhD, you lose sight of the bigger picture of your work. Being part of this programme allowed me to take a step back and see the value in my work, globally.
