Talking to a colleague about East Palestine, they asked why the town was pronounced that way and I got to explain the great Midwest tradition of naming a town after another, more well-known place in the world but giving it a different, confounding pronunciation

Like basically everything I’ve seen Malone claim about vaccination, this is false, but this claim is actually very common even among those with expertise in public health and I’ve even seen it in epidemiology textbooks, so I think it’s worth examining for a moment.
