Pre-war, China received about 5 million barrels per day via the strait from Gulf producers, 𝗪𝗜𝗧𝗛 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗩𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗠𝗔𝗝𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗦 𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡 𝗜𝗥𝗔𝗡 𝗦𝗨𝗖𝗛 𝗔𝗦 𝗦𝗔𝗨𝗗𝗜 𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗕𝗜𝗔, 𝗜𝗥𝗔𝗤, 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗨𝗔𝗘. Now only 1.2 to 1.5 million barrels per day still flow through it to China, almost entirely Iranian crude which Iran prioritized for its top buyer. 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗢𝗜𝗟 𝗙𝗥𝗢𝗠 𝗦𝗔𝗨𝗗𝗜 𝗔𝗥𝗔𝗕𝗜𝗔, 𝗜𝗥𝗔𝗤, 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗨𝗔𝗘 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗛𝗔𝗦 𝗕𝗘𝗘𝗡 𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗚𝗘𝗟𝗬 𝗕𝗟𝗢𝗖𝗞𝗘𝗗. Iran simply cannot replace the volumes those other countries used to send. China has offset the loss with stockpiles and Russian oil, but the disruption hurt enough to drive Beijing toward diplomacy. The United States could have opened the strait with its Navy at any time, yet President Trump kept that option in his back pocket while this leverage worked on China. Claims that China has received all its usual oil through a special Iran deal are false.
