@leekelly1 @John1986ire I think horses trained on AW are better conditioned for quicker going, at least initially. Not ideal for training NH horses though with such an emphasis on fitness in their races, hence the popularity of deep sand and wood chip gallops, uphill gallops etc.

@Lynam_S @John1986ire Curious but since horses are predominantly prepped on AW gallops compared to say 30 years ago and road work is a thing of the past does it heighten potential injury as they arnt conditioned for quick ground?

No mention of ground in ITV’s feature on Dawn Run’s Gold Cup win.She won on good to firm ground in record time. The attritional finishes during winter racing have their own gritty appeal, but the drier ground in the spring enhances the game too.Faster finishes, less tired horses.

@John1986ire Not sure of the exact rules & not asking for us to go back to firm, but worth bearing in mind that a lot of horses NH fans worship ran on quick ground back in the day. I know it’s different now but I think the v deep gallops a lot of trainers train on shapes the horses’ actions.

@Lynam_S Drier ground doesn’t suit the proper bred big heavy NH horses, that was Willies Point I believe. NH horses should not be running on good ground, that’s just my opinion anyway. What ground do the rules say they have to aim for for jumps racing ?
